Which laptop is with whom, when was it bought, when does its warranty end? Most offices answer those questions from memory. Snipe-IT answers them from a register — and it is free, open source, and genuinely quick to stand up.
Snipe-IT is a free, open source IT asset management system (released under the GNU AGPL v3 licence) that runs in a web browser. You give every device a unique asset tag, record who it is checked out to, and the system keeps the history — purchases, warranties, repairs, licence seats, all of it. It is built on the Laravel framework and stores its data in a MySQL or MariaDB database. There is no per-user fee and no licence server to argue with; the cost is the machine you run it on and the discipline to keep it fed. This core guide covers the complete setup: what you need, the fastest documented install route, the first-run wizard, and the moment your register goes live with its first asset.
Snipe-IT is web software — there is no .exe file. It needs a machine to live on: an office server, a small VM, or even a spare desktop PC that stays on during office hours. The documented requirements are a web server (Apache or Nginx), PHP 8.2 or newer with the standard Laravel extensions, and a MySQL/MariaDB database. Two gigabytes of RAM is a comfortable floor for a small office install. That list is exactly why the route matters: installing PHP, a database and a web server one by one is an hour of careful typing, while the container route below packs all of it into one tested bundle. Decide also where staff will reach it — a name like assets.office on your local network is enough; Snipe-IT does not need to face the internet, and later in this page set we argue it should not.
The Snipe-IT project publishes an official Docker image (snipe/snipe-it), and it is the route that honestly earns the word minutes. The shape of it:
docker-compose.yml setup — one container for Snipe-IT, one for its MySQL database, with a data volume so your uploads survive container restarts.env and set your site address (APP_URL), timezone and database passwordsdocker exec -i -t snipeit php artisan key:generate --env=productionKeep that APP_KEY safe — it encrypts sensitive fields, and losing it makes stored secrets unreadable. The manual route (install PHP, MariaDB and Nginx yourself, clone the project, run composer install, then php artisan key:generate) lands in exactly the same place and suits admins who want no Docker on the box. On Windows, community experience is that XAMPP can be fiddly with Snipe-IT; WAMP or IIS is the more travelled path there.
Open the address and Snipe-IT runs a pre-flight check first — PHP version, extensions, folder permissions, database connection. Fix anything it flags before continuing; the wizard will not let a broken base through, which is a kindness. Then you create the first admin account and the company settings: company name, site name, default currency and timezone. Spend two extra minutes in Admin > Settings right now, while it is fresh: turn on auto-incrementing asset tags if you want the system to number assets for you, set your date format, and configure the mail settings (SMTP) — checkout receipts, licence-expiry alerts and warranty warnings all travel by email, and a register that cannot send mail is half mute. The video walks through this first configuration live, screen by screen.
Before the first asset, Snipe-IT asks for four small vocabularies, and five minutes here saves months of mess later. Asset models describe what a thing is (for example, a specific laptop model) so fifty identical laptops share one description. Categories group them (Laptops, Desktops, Phones, Printers). Status labels say what state an asset is in — Ready to Deploy, Deployed, In Repair, Archived are the heartbeat of the whole system. Suppliers record who sold it to you, which the warranty and repair pages lean on later. Keep these lists short and boring. Every creative new category a staff member invents is a report that stops adding up.
Now the register goes live. Create an asset: pick its model, give it a unique asset tag (the system generates one if auto-increment is on), type the serial number, purchase date, purchase cost and warranty period. Then the act the entire system exists for — checkout. Choose the person, set an expected return date if there is one, and save. That laptop is now recorded as being in that person's custody, with a timestamp, in an audit history nobody can quietly rewrite. Add the person first if they are not in the system yet (People section — name, username, email, department). From this moment the question who has which laptop has an answer that is not somebody's memory. The remaining guides in this set take each part deeper: tags and printed QR labels, checkout discipline, users and permissions, licence seats, maintenance and warranty, importing your old Excel register, backups, and keeping the system itself safe.
The video title says five minutes, and for the installation itself that is a fair claim with the Docker route on a ready machine. Be honest with yourself about the rest: creating categories and models takes fifteen minutes; entering or importing your existing devices takes an afternoon; printing tags and sticking them on every machine takes a weekend; teaching the office that nothing moves without a checkout takes a month of gentle stubbornness. Snipe-IT the software is a five-minute install. Snipe-IT the habit is the real project — and it is still the cheapest asset system you will ever own, because the software costs nothing.
See the whole installation live in the video — the route, the wizard and the first settings, exactly as you will do them.

A web server (Apache or Nginx), PHP 8.2 or newer with the standard Laravel extensions, and a MySQL or MariaDB database. The official Docker image bundles the application side, which is why it is the fastest route for most offices.
No. Snipe-IT is a register: assets are added by you (one by one or by CSV import) and tracked through checkouts. It does not scan the network or install agents — that is a different kind of tool, and many offices run both.
