Default Gateway Explained the Door of Your Network

Of the four network values, the gateway has the clearest symptom when it breaks: local sharing alive, internet dead. This page explains the door, the rule your PC follows, and the ten-second check.

'Internet band hai, lekin printer chal raha hai' — if you have ever heard this sentence in an office, you have met a gateway problem. Here is exactly why that strange split happens.

Healthy vs broken gateway (example values)
Working setup
PC address192.168.1.25
Default gateway192.168.1.1
Broken setup — internet dead, sharing fine
PC address192.168.1.25
Default gateway192.168.1.99 (nothing lives here)

☝️ In the broken setup the local street is untouched — only the door points at an empty house, so nothing can leave the network.

1

One Door for Everything Outside

Your PC can deliver directly only inside its own street. For literally everything else — every website, every other office branch, the whole internet — it hands the data to one address: the default gateway. In homes and small offices the gateway is the router, usually sitting at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.

The word 'default' is the clue. It means: when I do not know a better route, use this door. A normal PC knows no other routes at all, so the gateway is used for 100 percent of outside traffic.

2

Why a Wrong Gateway Kills Only the Internet

This is the gateway's most useful diagnostic gift. If the gateway address is wrong or the field is empty:

  1. File sharing, printers and other PCs on your street — still work. They never needed the door.
  2. Every website and outside service — dead. The data reaches the 'door' and finds nobody home, or no door at all.

So when a user says 'the network is working but the internet is not', believe them — and check the gateway first. That exact split is the gateway's signature.

How to Check Your Gateway in Ten Seconds

  1. Open Command Prompt and run ipconfig
  2. Read the line Default Gateway under your active adapter
  3. Test the door itself: ping 192.168.1.1 (use your own gateway's address)

If the ping to the gateway fails, the problem is inside your building — cable, Wi-Fi or the router itself. If the gateway answers but websites do not open, the problem is beyond the door — the router's own internet connection or DNS.

4

Rules the Gateway Must Follow

The gateway must live on your own street. If your PC is 192.168.1.25 with mask 255.255.255.0, a gateway of 192.168.2.1 is unreachable by definition — the PC would need a door to reach the door. Windows accepts the entry silently, and then nothing outside works.

There is also normally only one active default gateway. PCs with both LAN and Wi-Fi connected technically have two doors and pick one by priority — a classic cause of 'internet works on cable but not on Wi-Fi' confusion in offices.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What is a default gateway in simple words?

It is the door out of your local network — almost always your router. Your PC delivers local traffic directly, but hands everything meant for outside addresses to the gateway. A typical gateway address is 192.168.1.1.

Why does file sharing work when the internet is down?

Because sharing with a PC on the same network never uses the gateway. Delivery stays inside the local network. Only traffic for outside addresses needs the door — so a broken gateway or a dead internet line stops websites while local sharing carries on.

Can the gateway be on a different network than my PC?

No. The gateway must be reachable directly, which means it must be on the same subnet. If your PC is 192.168.1.25 with mask 255.255.255.0, the gateway must also be a 192.168.1.x address. Any other value is accepted silently by Windows but can never work.
