How to Read Ipconfig Output and Understand Your Network
ipconfig is the first tool every technician opens and the last one most users learn to read. This page decodes a full ipconfig /all report line by line, so the screen starts telling you the story itself.

When support asks you to 'run ipconfig and tell me what it says', they are reading a diagnosis, not a formality. After this page, you will be able to read the same diagnosis yourself — address, mask, gateway, DHCP and DNS, plus the three warning patterns that give faults away.
Command Prompt — ipconfig /all on a healthy PC (example values)
☝️ Real ipconfig /all output looks like this. Every line below is decoded one by one — example values, your numbers will differ.
1
One Command, the Whole Truth
Open Command Prompt and run ipconfig /all. Plain ipconfig shows the short version; /all adds the details that matter for diagnosis — DHCP server, lease time and DNS. Everything on the screen is your PC's own report about itself, so it is the most honest witness you have.
Ignore adapters you are not using (a disconnected LAN port will say 'Media disconnected' — that is normal, not a fault). Read only the adapter that is actually connected.
2
The Five Lines That Matter
IPv4 Address — your house number. '(Preferred)' simply means this address is active and accepted.
Subnet Mask — 255.255.255.0 (/24) means your street is the first three numbers.
Default Gateway — the door out, normally your router, on the same street as your address.
DHCP Server — who handed you this configuration. Usually the same address as the gateway.
DNS Servers — the phonebook in use. One or two addresses may be listed.
3
Reading Trouble From the Output
The output quietly announces most faults:
Address starts with 169.254 → DHCP never answered; check cable, Wi-Fi and router
Default Gateway line is blank → local sharing may work, internet cannot
Gateway is on a different street than your address → a wrong static entry is likely
Lease Obtained shows a time → proves DHCP answered at that moment; no lease lines at all means the address was set manually (static)
4
Two Companion Commands Worth Knowing
ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew asks DHCP for a fresh configuration — the polite way to clear a stale or wrong lease without restarting. And ipconfig /flushdns empties the remembered name lookups when a website has moved or DNS was just fixed. Both are safe, take seconds, and change nothing else.

Run ipconfig /all on your own PC while watching the video — reading your real values makes every line stick.
What is the difference between ipconfig and ipconfig /all?
Plain ipconfig shows the short version: address, mask and gateway. Adding /all shows the full report — DHCP server, lease obtained time, DNS servers and adapter details — which is the version needed for proper diagnosis.
What does it mean if my IP address starts with 169.254?
It means DHCP did not give your PC an address, so Windows assigned itself a fallback from the 169.254 range. The PC is not really on your network — check the cable, the Wi-Fi connection and the router before changing any settings.
My default gateway line is empty. What breaks?
Only outside traffic. PCs, printers and shares on your own network can still work, because they do not use the gateway. But nothing can leave the local network, so the internet appears completely dead until the gateway is restored.
