Bluetooth Audio Stuttering and Breaking Up - It Is Rarely the Driver
Important honesty up front: if your earbuds connect and play, but the sound stutters, crackles or drops for a second at a time, your driver is almost certainly innocent. Connected-but-stuttering is a radio problem. This page covers the real causes, in the order they actually occur.

Drivers decide whether Bluetooth works at all. Stutter is different: the connection exists, but the small 2.4 GHz radio link between your PC and your earbuds cannot carry clean audio through your room. Two devices streaming, a busy Wi-Fi band, a USB 3 hub and a concrete wall all squeeze that same narrow link. Fix the air, not the software.
What squeezes a Bluetooth audio link (summary panel)
Distance and walls every wall eats signal
2.4 GHz Wi-Fi traffic same band, louder neighbour
USB 3 hub next to the PC known 2.4 GHz noise source
Phone also connected earbuds split their attention
Mic mode (hands-free) halves audio quality by design
👆 The five usual squeezes on a Bluetooth audio link (summary panel, not a Windows screen)
1
Run the Two-Minute Isolation Test First
Sit within one metre of the PC, line of sight, phone in another room
If audio becomes clean, your link was signal-starved - the fixes below are about range and interference, and no repair is needed
If it still stutters at one metre, skip to Step 4 - something in the PC or the earbuds themselves is wrong
2
Remove the Interference You Control
USB 3 hubs and drives: USB 3 ports are documented to radiate noise in the 2.4 GHz band. Move the hub or external drive away from the PC's Bluetooth side, and never rest earbuds on a USB 3 hub while listening
Wi-Fi band: if your router offers 5 GHz, put the PC and phone on 5 GHz - every device that leaves 2.4 GHz makes the band quieter for Bluetooth
Microwave ovens also broadcast at 2.4 GHz; stutter that matches lunch time is real, not a mystery
Distance and body: a PC under a metal desk, or earbuds worn with the PC behind a wall, will stutter. A cheap extension for a USB Bluetooth dongle, raising it above the desk, helps more than any setting
3
The Hands-Free Mode Trap - Bad Quality That Is Working as Designed
The moment an app opens the microphone - a call, a meeting, voice chat in a game - Windows switches your headset to hands-free profile, which shares the link between mic and speakers and sounds like a cheap phone call. That is a Bluetooth design limit, not a fault. Fixes: use a separate microphone (laptop mic or wired mic) and keep output on the stereo profile, or accept the quality inside calls only.
4
When It Really Is the PC or the Earbuds
Stutter with every Bluetooth audio device on this PC, at one metre: reinstall the laptop maker's Bluetooth driver once, cleanly - and if your adapter is an old USB dongle, test an internal adapter or a newer dongle
Stutter with one device on every PC and phone: the earbuds are the problem - reset them to factory (case button reset) and update their firmware in the maker's app
Stutter only in one app: the app is choosing the wrong output or the hands-free profile - check its own audio settings before touching anything system-wide
⚠️ Save your afternoon: reinstalling drivers ten times will not fix a signal problem. The one-metre test in Step 1 takes two minutes and tells you which world you are in - radio or software. Always run it first.

My earbuds stutter only when I walk to the kitchen. Broken?
No - that is range plus walls, and it is normal Bluetooth behaviour. Class 2 Bluetooth (most earbuds and laptops) is a roughly 10-metre technology through open air, much less through concrete.
Why does audio get worse during online games and calls?
The microphone path opens and Windows switches to the hands-free profile, which shares the narrow link between voice up and audio down. Use a different microphone and keep the headset on its stereo profile.
Would a Bluetooth 5 dongle fix stutter on my old laptop?
It can help range and stability if the internal card is old or failing, and it moves the radio away from the PC's noise. It cannot fix walls, distance or a busy 2.4 GHz band.
