Bluetooth Missing in Device Manager - Dead Radio or Just Hidden

Before downloading anything, find out whether your Bluetooth radio is alive. Device Manager shows one of three states, and each state has a different fix. This page teaches you to read them honestly.

Every Bluetooth repair starts with one question: does Windows see the radio at all? Downloading drivers before answering it is guesswork. Open Device Manager with devmgmt.msc and look at the Bluetooth section. You will find exactly one of the three states below - each has its own meaning and its own next step.

Device Manager - Bluetooth section, three real states (recreated)
State 1 Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R) normal icon = radio healthy State 2 Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R) ⚠ yellow icon = driver problem (Code 43 / Code 10) State 3 (no Bluetooth section at all) radio hidden, disabled or dead
👆 The three states you will meet in Device Manager (panel recreated with real Windows wording; adapter name is an example)

State 1 - Adapter Listed With a Normal Icon

Good news: the hardware and driver are working. If your device still will not connect, the fault is the pairing record or the Bluetooth Support Service - not the radio. Do not reinstall drivers in this state; remove the device in Settings and pair it fresh, and check that the Bluetooth Support Service is running.

State 2 - Yellow Warning Icon: Read the Code

Double-click the adapter and read the Device status box on the General tab. The two codes you will actually meet:

  1. This device cannot start. (Code 10) - the driver loaded but the device failed to start. Cause is almost always a wrong or corrupt driver
  2. Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) - the device itself told Windows something is wrong; after ruling out the driver, this can be real hardware trouble
  3. For both: uninstall the device with Attempt to remove the driver ticked, restart, and install the Bluetooth driver from your laptop maker's support page for your exact model
3

State 3 - No Bluetooth Section At All

Windows does not hide a whole section for fun. Work through this short list:

  1. Device Manager → View → Show hidden devices. A greyed Bluetooth section means the adapter was seen before but is not active now
  2. USB dongle users: unplug the dongle, restart, plug it into a different USB port - ports and dongles both fail
  3. Restart into BIOS/UEFI setup and confirm the onboard wireless/Bluetooth option is Enabled - a BIOS reset or update sometimes switches it off
  4. Check the laptop's physical wireless switch or Fn key combination - on older laptops this cuts the whole wireless card

The Honest Verdict - When It Really Is Dead

If the adapter appears in no list - not in Device Manager with hidden devices shown, not in BIOS - and a known-good USB Bluetooth dongle works in the same PC, the internal wireless card has most likely failed. That is a hardware answer, and it is a useful one: on most laptops the combined Wi-Fi + Bluetooth card is one small module under the back cover, replaceable in minutes. Stop installing drivers and replace the card.

⚠️ Do not skip the reading step: the same symptom - Bluetooth will not connect - comes from all three states, but the fix for each state does nothing for the other two. Two minutes in Device Manager saves an afternoon of wrong downloads.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Bluetooth worked yesterday and the section vanished today. Dead card?

Not necessarily. A Windows update or BIOS reset can disable the adapter. Check Show hidden devices and the BIOS wireless setting first - only if it is missing everywhere is hardware failure likely.

Code 43 keeps coming back after every driver install. Why?

A Code 43 that survives a clean driver install from the laptop maker is the device reporting an internal fault. At that point the honest fix is replacing the wireless card, not trying a fifth driver.

There is no Bluetooth section, but Wi-Fi works. How?

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth share one card but use separate sections in Device Manager. A failed Bluetooth half, a disabled BIOS option, or a corrupt Bluetooth driver can hide the Bluetooth section while Wi-Fi keeps working.
