Clean GPU Driver Install for DaVinci Resolve with DDU
You installed the newest driver and Resolve still complains. Sometimes the driver is not old - it is damaged. This is the careful, last-resort way to remove it completely and start clean.

Most driver problems are solved by a normal update, and this guide is not a first step. It is for the stubborn residue: drivers that survived years of in-place upgrades, a Windows Update that half-replaced the graphics driver, or files like the CUDA library left broken after a crash. In those cases the new installer writes over a mess and the mess wins. A clean install - fully removing the old driver with Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) before installing fresh - is the recognised workshop fix. Done in the wrong order it creates new problems, so follow the order exactly.
Clean GPU driver install - the safe order (checklist panel)
☐ Download the new Studio Driver FIRST, while you still have internet
☐ Download DDU only from its official source (Wagnardsoft)
☐ Disconnect from the internet so Windows Update cannot grab the wheel
☐ Boot into Safe Mode and remove the old driver with DDU
☐ Restart, install the fresh driver offline, then reconnect
👆 The order is the whole trick. Skip the internet step and Windows reinstalls its own driver mid-surgery
1
Prepare Everything Before You Remove Anything
Download the latest Studio Driver (NVIDIA) or current AMD driver package for your card and keep the installer on your desktop
Download DDU only from its official home, Wagnardsoft - driver-tool download sites are a classic malware wrapper, so the source matters more than the tool
Create a system restore point - you are about to remove the component that paints your screen
Save your work and close everything, including Resolve
2
Disconnect From the Internet - The Step Everyone Skips
Unplug the network cable or switch off Wi-Fi before you begin. The moment Windows finds a GPU with no driver, Windows Update helpfully installs its own choice - usually an older, generic version - and your clean install is contaminated before it starts. Staying offline until your chosen driver is in place keeps you in control of which driver the machine gets.
3
Remove the Old Driver in Safe Mode With DDU
Boot Windows into Safe Mode (hold Shift while choosing Restart, then Troubleshoot, Advanced options, Startup Settings)
Run DDU, select your GPU type and vendor
Choose Clean and restart
Let the machine reboot normally - the display will look big and basic; that is expected with no driver loaded
Safe Mode matters because it stops the running driver from protecting its own files, which is how ordinary uninstalls leave the broken pieces behind.
4
Install Fresh, Reconnect, and Re-Verify in Resolve
While still offline, run the driver installer you downloaded and complete it
Restart the PC once more
Reconnect to the internet
Open Resolve, visit Preferences, System, Memory and GPU and re-confirm mode and GPU selection - a new driver can reset Resolve's idea of your hardware
Play a real timeline before declaring victory
🔴 Honest limits: DDU is a free third-party tool from Wagnardsoft, not an NVIDIA, AMD or Blackmagic product. It is widely used by technicians for exactly this job, but it earns its place only after a normal driver update has failed - it is a scalpel, not a vitamin.

If a normal update fixed your warning, skip this entirely. If it did not, the video's fix plus this clean-install order is the combination that closes the case.
DDU from its official source (Wagnardsoft) is a long-standing technician's tool and is safe when used as directed - in Safe Mode, with a restore point made first. The risk lives in fake download sites bundling it with junk, which is why the source is stressed throughout this guide.
Why must I disconnect the internet during a clean driver install?
Because Windows Update automatically supplies a driver for any GPU that has none, the instant it notices. That driver is rarely the Studio Driver you chose, and it lands in the middle of your clean install. Installing your driver offline first keeps the machine on your choice.
Will a clean driver install delete my DaVinci Resolve projects?
No. DDU removes graphics driver files only; Resolve, its project database and your media are untouched. You may need to re-confirm the GPU mode and selection inside Resolve afterwards, because the new driver presents the hardware freshly.
