Never Update Tally Prime During Month End or GST Filing Week
Ask experienced accountants when to update Tally and they will not name a version — they will name a date on the calendar. Timing is a technical control, and this is the whole rulebook.

An update consumes three scarce things: the staff's attention, a window where billing can pause, and room to recover if something surprises. Month-end and filing week have already spent all three. The same update that is boring on a quiet Saturday becomes a story everyone remembers when it is attempted against a due date.
The office calendar, honestly labelled
Month-end days : closing entries, reconciliations,
payroll, stock taking -> NO
GST due-date week : GSTR-1, then GSTR-3B deadlines,
CA waiting on your data -> NO
Festival rush /
dispatch peaks : billing at full load -> NO
-------------------------------------------------------
The quiet days AFTER a filing is accepted,
before the next cycle gathers speed -> YES
The update does not care about your calendar. Your calendar has to care about the update.
1
What Goes Wrong When the Timing Is Wrong
A migration surprise at month-end does not just delay the update — it delays the closing, and every report that depends on it
In filing week, a half-day lost to licence or printing trouble lands directly on a due date, where late fees and interest do not accept explanations
Staff under deadline pressure skip the safety steps — the backup "to save time", the verification "because it looked fine" — which is how a routine update manufactures its own incident
If a rollback is needed, the pre-update backup is missing the most recent, most frantic entries — the worst possible restore point
2
Pick the Window Like an Accountant
Update after the return is filed and accepted, in the calm that follows — the books for that cycle are already with the government, and the new cycle is young
Choose a day when billing can pause for a few hours without hurting dispatch — for many offices, a Saturday morning
Announce it the day before, finish pending vouchers, and take the backup at close of business the previous day
Keep the next morning free of commitments, so verification — totals, GST summary, test prints — happens without a queue forming at your desk
3
The One Honest Exception
Sometimes a new release fixes the very thing blocking a filing — a return-format correction, a portal validation change. Then updating during filing season can be the right call, but it changes species: it is no longer a routine update, it is an emergency repair. Do it by the test-company route — migrate a copy, verify the filing figures there, then update the live books with the backup discipline doubled, and your CA informed before, not after.
4
A Standing Rule Worth Pinning Above the Server
"Tally updates happen in the week after filing, never in the week before a due date." One sentence, agreed with the accountant, ends the annual debate about whether there is time. Pair it with the TSS reminder a month before expiry, and the two calendar rules together remove nearly every self-inflicted Tally emergency an office can have.
🔴 Remember: the update will take the same hour whenever you run it. What changes with timing is the price of a surprise. Run it on a quiet day and a surprise costs an hour. Run it against a due date and the same surprise costs fees, interest and a very long evening. Choose the cheap day.

The complete TallyPrime 6.1 to 7.0 update, done live on screen — backup, installation, migration and licence check included.
Our GSTR-3B is due in two days and Tally is offering the 7.0 update. Should we?
No. File from the release you trust today, on time. Update in the quiet days right after the filing is accepted, verify the new release against the figures you just filed, and start the next cycle on 7.0 with the whole month ahead of you.
What if a release fixes a bug that is blocking our filing right now?
That is the one real exception — treat it as an emergency repair, not an update. Test the new release on a copy of the company first, confirm the filing figures there, inform your CA, and only then update the live books with full backups.
When exactly is the best day in a typical month?
The days just after your GST returns for the previous month are filed and accepted, before month-end closing work for the current month builds up. For most offices that is a predictable, repeatable window — put the update there every time.
