Take a Full Backup Before the Tally Prime 7.0 Update and Prove It Restores

Everyone takes a backup before updating. Very few check whether that backup can be restored — and an unrestorable backup is not a backup, it is a hope. This guide does both halves of the job.

Why does this backup matter more than the daily one? Because of what happens next in the update: the first time TallyPrime 7.0 opens your company, it migrates the data to the new format, and migrated data can no longer be saved from 6.1. If anything about 7.0 does not suit your office, this backup — and only this backup — takes you home. Treat it like the business document it is.

Take the backup from inside TallyPrime first — it is the format the Restore option understands best. Screen recreated.

1

Close Every TallyPrime Window First

A backup is a photograph of the data at one moment. If a colleague saves a voucher while the photograph is being taken, that voucher may not be in it — and nobody will know until the day the backup is restored.

  1. Tell everyone in the office: Tally closes in five minutes, finish and save your current voucher
  2. Close the company, then close TallyPrime itself — on the server and on every client in a multi-user setup
  3. Reopen TallyPrime alone, only for the backup
2

Take the Backup From Inside TallyPrime

TallyPrime's own backup packs each company into a backup file that its Restore option can open without any other tool. This is the copy you will actually use in an emergency.

  1. Press Alt + Y (Data) → Backup
  2. Choose the destination — a folder named with the date and the reason, such as D:\TallyBackup-Before-7.0
  3. Select all companies, including the old ones you rarely open. The day you need an old year is always the day it was skipped
  4. Wait for the success message before closing anything
3

Make a Second Copy — and Put One Copy Off This Computer

The installer does not touch your data folder, but hard disks do not take appointments before failing. Two copies, in two places, is the minimum honest standard for the books of a business.

  1. Copy the entire data folder — by default C:\Users\Public\TallyPrime\Data — to a pen drive or external disk
  2. Copy the backup folder from Step 2 there as well
  3. If your office uses cloud storage, that is a fine third place — but do not let it be the only extra copy, because restore day is often the day the internet is down
4

Prove It Restores — Before You Update Anything

This ten-minute test is what separates a backup from a belief.

  1. Create a scratch folder such as D:\TallyRestoreTest
  2. Press Alt + Y (Data) → Restore, point the source at your backup and the destination at the scratch folder
  3. Open the restored company in 6.1 and check: does it load, do the ledgers appear, does the trial balance tally?
  4. Close it and delete the scratch folder — the test copy must never be mistaken for the live company later

If the restore fails, take the backup again to a different destination and test once more. Discovering a bad backup now costs ten minutes. Discovering it after migration costs the company its books.

5

Note the Numbers You Will Compare Later

Before updating, open each main company and write down: the trial balance total, the last voucher number and date, and the closing stock value. After the update and migration, open 7.0 and compare the same three numbers. A match is your proof that the migration carried everything. A mismatch means stop and investigate while the backup still makes recovery easy.

🔴 Honest bottom line: TallyPrime updates are routine, and data loss from the update itself is rare. The offices that get hurt are the ones where the backup was skipped, taken while entries were still being saved, or never once test-restored. Three small disciplines — closed windows, two copies, one test restore — remove almost all of the risk before the installer even runs.

❓ Common Questions (FAQ)

Where does TallyPrime store the company data I should copy?

By default, companies live in the folder C:\Users\Public\TallyPrime\Data, unless your office changed the data path. You can confirm your path in TallyPrime from the company selection screen, which shows the data location being used.

Is TallyPrime's own backup enough, or do I need the folder copy too?

Take both. The in-product backup is the easiest to restore, and the plain folder copy protects you if the backup file itself is ever damaged. They cost a few minutes and a pen drive, and together they cover each other's weak spots.

How long should I keep the pre-update backup?

Keep it at least until you have worked in 7.0 through one full filing cycle and compared your reports. Most offices keep the before-update backup permanently with the year's other records — it is small, and it is the last copy of the books exactly as 6.1 left them.
