Most “the update broke Tally” stories turn out to be a licence prompt, an unfinished migration, or a printer setting — all fixable in minutes. The genuinely hard cases share one cause: no backup. Here is the calm order to work in.
Do not start by uninstalling anything. Post-update trouble in TallyPrime falls into a few well-known shapes, and each has its own fix. Work through the shapes in order — the first one that matches your screen is almost certainly your whole problem.
This company's data now belongs to a newer release of TallyPrime.
Saving from this older release is not allowed, and TallyPrime will close to protect the data.
Open the company in Release 7.0 instead.
If this is your screen, nothing is broken — someone opened the migrated company from a 6.1 shortcut. Delete the old shortcut. Dialog recreated in the product's documented behaviour.
The licence is not active on this machine right now. Your data is safe; voucher entry is restricted until activation. This happens if the licence was surrendered earlier, Windows was reinstalled, or the update landed on a different PC than the licence lives on. Fix: reactivate with your Tally.NET ID from the licence options in the Help menu — a separate guide in this set walks through it. Do not buy anything; the licence you own already covers 7.0 while TSS is active.
A migration was interrupted — power cut, forced close, a laptop that slept. TallyPrime marks the company Continue Migration; select it and let the migration finish in one uninterrupted sitting, machine plugged in. If it fails at the same point repeatedly, stop: restore the pre-update backup into a separate folder and involve your Tally partner. A company that cannot migrate often has an older data problem that should be repaired in 6.1, on a copy, before trying again.
Compare before you panic: trial balance total, last voucher date, closing stock — against the notes taken before the update. A genuine mismatch means stop working in 7.0 and investigate with the backup beside you. Far more common: a filter, period or report setting differs on the new screen, and the underlying data is identical. Check the same report, same period, same company, before declaring the migration guilty.
Printer choices live on each computer, not inside the company data, and a new installation can reset which printer or template TallyPrime prefers. Re-select the printer in TallyPrime, print one test invoice to PDF, and only then print to paper. Custom templates and add-ons (TDLs) may also need to be re-pointed at the new installation folder — a two-minute job that feels like a disaster until someone checks the configuration.
If 7.0 genuinely cannot serve your office right now, here is the whole truth about going back:
Read that last line twice. It is the entire reason the backup guides in this set exist.
The complete TallyPrime 6.1 to 7.0 update, done live on screen — backup, installation, migration and licence check included.
▶️ Watch Full VideoAlmost always, the company was opened from an old 6.1 shortcut after its data was migrated to 7.0. The earlier release cannot save in migrated data, so TallyPrime errors and closes to protect it. Open the company in 7.0 and delete the old shortcut.
Reinstalling 6.1 is only half of a rollback — the other half is restoring the backup taken before the update, because your migrated data belongs to 7.0 now. Any work done in 7.0 after the update will not exist in that older backup and must be re-entered.
Stay on 7.0 and fix forward: finish any stuck migration, reactivate the licence if asked, and take help from your Tally partner or Tally support for data-level problems. The data itself is usually intact — what is lost without a backup is the option to retreat, not the books.
