Tally Prime Licence After the 7.0 Update When Reactivation Is Asked
The installer finished, the company migrated — and TallyPrime opens in Educational Mode. Before anyone reaches for a wallet, read this. In almost every case the licence is fine and only needs to be reactivated.

An update to a new release does not consume or cancel your licence. The licence lives on your computer and is tied to your licence serial number and your Tally.NET ID — the e-mail ID the licence was registered with. Release 7.0 installs over 6.1, and on the same machine the activation normally carries across without you touching anything.
TallyPrime — Help > About, licence section
Licence Serial Number : 7xxxxxxxx (example)
Edition : TallyPrime / TallyPrime Edit Log
TSS : Valid
Status : Licence is active
If instead TallyPrime opens with the words
Educational Mode — the licence is not
currently active on this machine.
Check the licence where TallyPrime itself reports it — Help, then About. Serial number shown as an example only.
1
First, Understand What Educational Mode Is
When TallyPrime cannot find an active licence, it does not lock you out of your data — it opens in Educational Mode. You can open companies and view your books, but voucher entry is restricted to only a few days of the month, which makes daily accounting impossible. Treat Educational Mode as a message, not a verdict: it says "activate the licence on this machine", nothing more. Your data is untouched and your licence is not lost.
2
The Situations Where Reactivation Is Genuinely Asked
The licence was surrendered on this PC at some point — for example, while moving Tally to another machine — and never brought back
Windows was reinstalled, or the computer's hardware changed in a major way since activation
The update was installed as a fresh installation on a new PC instead of in place on the old one
The office runs a multi-user (Gold) licence and the licence needs attention on the server machine that hosts it
If none of these happened and 7.0 still asks, restart the computer once and check again before doing anything else — a half-finished first start causes more false alarms than real licence faults.
3
Reactivate With Your Tally.NET ID — Step by Step
Open TallyPrime and go to the licence options from the Help (F1) menu — choose the reactivate option
Enter your Tally.NET ID (the registered e-mail) and its password when asked
Complete any verification Tally sends, and wait for the activation success message
Close and reopen TallyPrime, then check Help → About: the serial number should show in full, with the licence active
Forgot the Tally.NET password? Use the official forgot password route for that e-mail account. Do not create a fresh Tally.NET ID for an old licence — the licence is registered to the original ID, and a new ID cannot see it.
4
Keep the Licence Details Where the Office Can Find Them
Most licence panic is really a records problem. After this update, write down in one place — a page in the office register or a note with the server: the licence serial number, the Tally.NET ID, the edition (regular or Edit Log), the TSS validity date, and the Tally partner's phone number. The next update, audit or PC change then starts with answers instead of archaeology.
5
What Never to Do
Never buy a second licence for the same business because an update asked for activation — activation and purchase are different things, and your existing licence covers the new release while TSS is active
Never use a licence file or activation trick from an unknown website — apart from being piracy, tampered accounting software puts the company's books themselves at risk
Never keep working for weeks in Educational Mode by entering vouchers on the permitted days only — fix the activation the same day, with your Tally partner's help if needed
🔴 Honest bottom line: an update asking for reactivation is a two-minute administrative task, not a lost licence and not a new purchase. Your serial number and Tally.NET ID are the keys — keep them recorded, and no TallyPrime update will ever hold your billing hostage.

The complete TallyPrime 6.1 to 7.0 update, done live on screen — backup, installation, migration and licence check included.
No. Your existing licence covers new releases while your TSS subscription is active. An expired TSS is renewed against the same licence serial number — you are never asked to buy the licence again just to update.
TallyPrime shows Educational Mode after the update. Is my data safe?
Yes, your data is completely safe — Educational Mode only limits what you can do until the licence is active again. You can view everything; voucher entry is restricted. Reactivate the licence with your Tally.NET ID and full working returns.
I do not know which e-mail is the Tally.NET ID. What now?
Check the original licence paperwork or invoice from when Tally was purchased, and ask your Tally partner — partners can usually confirm the registered ID against your serial number. That is faster and safer than guessing or registering a new ID.
