Test the Tally Prime 7.0 Update on a Copy of Your Company First
An hour with a copy buys you the one thing the live update cannot: a rehearsal. If 7.0 has a surprise for your data, your printers or your add-ons, you meet it in the copy — where surprises are free.

Nothing in this guide is a substitute for trying the update on your own data before committing to it. Your company has its own history: years of vouchers, custom templates, maybe a TDL add-on or two. A copy lets 7.0 meet all of that while the live books stay safely in 6.1.
The test-company method, in one view
LIVE books (6.1) ---- untouched, billing continues
|
+-- copy of data folder / restored backup
|
TEST company in 7.0
+-- migrate the COPY
+-- compare totals vs 6.1 notes
+-- GST summary + print tests
+-- PASS -> update live
+-- FAIL -> fix here, books unharmed
The copy absorbs every surprise. The live company is only updated after the copy has passed every check.
1
Make the Test Company From Your Backup
Take the standard pre-update backup from inside TallyPrime 6.1 (Alt + Y → Backup) with all users out
Install 7.0 on a spare PC if you have one — ideal. If not, install it on the same PC; the test still works, because you will test with restored data in a separate folder, not the live one
In 7.0, use Alt + Y (Data) → Restore to restore the backup into a clearly named test location such as D:\TallyTest-7.0
Rename your mental label, not just the folder: this is the copy, and the copy only
2
Migrate the Copy and Compare the Numbers That Matter
Open the test company in 7.0 and accept migration, with the backup-before-migrate option on
Compare against the notes from 6.1: trial balance total, last voucher number and date, closing stock value
Open the balance sheet and one month's sales register and eyeball them against the same screens in the live 6.1 company
Any mismatch is a finding, not a nuisance — write down exactly which figure moved before touching anything else
3
Run the Working-Day Tests, Not Just the Totals
GST: open the GST summary for your last filed month in the copy and compare its headline figures with what you actually filed
Print: print one sales invoice and one report — to PDF first, then to the real printer your billing uses
Entry: pass one small test voucher in the copy, save it, view it, then delete it. Entry is where add-ons and customisations show their faults
Everyday screens: open the two or three reports your office lives in — outstanding receivables, stock summary, day book — and confirm they load at normal speed
4
Decide, in Writing, Then Update the Live Books
Write the result on one line in the office register: "Tested 7.0 on copy of [company] on [date] — totals matched, GST matched, printing fine." That sentence is your go-ahead. Then run the real update on the live data with the same backup discipline as always — the rehearsal never replaces the live backup, it just makes the live evening calm. If the copy failed a check, you have lost nothing: stay on 6.1, fix the issue with your Tally partner, and test again.
🔴 Why this page exists: every horror story in the other guides — stuck migration, wrong totals, dead printing on billing morning — becomes a minor diary entry when it happens to a copy first. Offices with a test habit describe updates as boring. That is the highest compliment an accounting update can earn.

Will restoring a backup into 7.0 affect my live company?
No — restoring into a separate folder creates an independent copy. Your live company in its original data folder is untouched until you choose to open it in 7.0. Keep the test folder clearly named so nobody mistakes it for the live books.
Our office has no spare computer. Can we still test first?
Yes. Install 7.0 on the same PC and restore the backup into a separate test folder. Just be disciplined: during the test period, live work continues only in the original company, and the test copy is opened only for checking.
What exactly should match between 6.1 and the migrated copy?
The headline truths of the business: trial balance total, last voucher number and date, closing stock value, and the GST figures for a month you have already filed. If those agree, the migration has carried your books faithfully.
