Update Tally Prime 6.1 to 7.0 Safely With Backup and Licence Steps

TallyPrime 7.0 is a free upgrade when your TSS is active — but the update is a one-way door for your company data. Do these steps in order and the whole job takes less than an hour, with a tested backup standing behind you.

Updating TallyPrime is not difficult. What goes wrong in offices is almost never the installer — it is the skipped backup, an expired TSS discovered halfway, or a company that got migrated while someone still needed the old version. This guide runs the update the way a careful technician does: check, back up, install, migrate once, verify. Nothing here deletes your data, and at every step you will know how to stop safely.

TallyPrime — Help > About (what to check before you start)
TallyPrime Release 6.1

Licence serial number: shown here in full when the licence is active.
TSS (Tally Software Services): valid till a future date.
If TSS shows expired, stop — renew first, then update.

The About screen tells you two things that decide everything: your current release and whether your TSS is still valid. Example wording, recreated.

1

Check Your TSS Before Anything Else

The 7.0 upgrade is free for licences with an active TSS subscription. If the TSS has expired, the new release is not available to you until you renew — and finding that out after uninstalling or halfway through a download wastes the whole evening.

  1. Open TallyPrime 6.1 and go to Help → About
  2. Note your licence serial number and the TSS validity date
  3. If TSS is expired, renew it through your Tally partner or the official Tally website first — the renewal attaches to this same serial number
  4. Also note whether you use the regular edition or the Edit Log edition — you must install the same edition of 7.0
2

Take a Backup — and Keep a Second Copy of the Data Folder

This is the step that decides whether a bad day stays a bad day or becomes a disaster. The update itself does not delete data, but the company migration in the next steps cannot be reversed — your backup is the only way back to 6.1.

  1. Ask every user to close TallyPrime. A backup taken while someone is entering vouchers can miss their last entries
  2. Press Alt + Y (Data) → Backup, select all companies, and save the backup to a folder you can find again
  3. Also copy the complete data folder — by default C:\Users\Public\TallyPrime\Data — to a pen drive or another computer
  4. Write down three numbers from each main company: the trial balance total, the last voucher date, and the closing stock value. You will compare them after the update

Keep the 6.1 setup file as well. If you ever need to go back, you will need the old installer plus this backup — there is no downgrade button inside TallyPrime.

3

Download 7.0 Only From Tally — or Update From Inside TallyPrime

Two honest routes, both official. Never download a Tally setup from a file-sharing or "free download" site — accounting software is exactly where a tampered installer hurts most.

  1. From inside TallyPrime: go to Help → Check for Updates. If 7.0 is available for your licence, TallyPrime offers the update there
  2. From the website: download the TallyPrime 7.0 setup from tallysolutions.com — the same edition (regular or Edit Log) that you are running today
  3. Close TallyPrime on this machine before running the setup
4

Install Over the Existing Version

You do not uninstall 6.1 first. The 7.0 setup detects the existing installation and updates it in place — your companies, licence and settings stay where they are.

  1. Run the downloaded setup and follow the installer screens
  2. When the setup shows the existing TallyPrime installation, choose the Update option rather than a fresh parallel install
  3. Let the installation finish completely. On a slow office PC this can take a few minutes — do not restart midway
  4. In a multi-user (Gold) office, update the server machine first, then every client machine — a separate guide on this page set covers that rollout in detail
5

Open Each Company Once and Let It Migrate

The first time 7.0 opens a company created in 6.1, TallyPrime converts the data to the new format. This is called migration, and TallyPrime asks before it starts.

  1. Open TallyPrime 7.0 and select your company
  2. When the migration prompt appears, choose Yes to migrate
  3. When asked about taking a backup before migration, choose Yes and give a destination — this is a second safety copy, taken by TallyPrime itself
  4. Wait for migration to complete. Do not force-close TallyPrime in between, and do not run Data Split or Repair Data while a migration is in progress

If a migration is ever interrupted, the company shows a Continue Migration status the next time you open it — select it and let it finish from where it stopped.

Migrate company data?

This company was created in an earlier release.
TallyPrime needs to migrate the data before you can work on it.
Take a backup before migration? — choose Yes.

6

Verify the Licence and the Numbers Before Billing Resumes

The update is not finished when the installer closes. It is finished when these four checks pass:

  1. Release: Help → About now shows TallyPrime Release 7.0
  2. Licence: the serial number shows in full and TallyPrime is not running in Educational Mode. On the same computer, an in-place update normally keeps the licence active — if activation is asked for, reactivate with your Tally.NET ID instead of buying anything
  3. Numbers: compare the trial balance, last voucher date and stock value with the notes you took in Step 2 — they must match
  4. Print test: print or save one invoice and one report as PDF, so printer or template problems surface today, not during tomorrow's billing

Only after all four pass should the team resume normal work — in 7.0, not in any old 6.1 shortcut still lying on a desktop.

🔴 The one honest warning: migration is a one-way door. Tally's own documentation is clear — once a company's migration to the new release is complete, that data works only with the new release, and trying to save a transaction in the earlier version shows an error and closes the application. Your pre-update backup (Step 2) is the only road back. Take it, and this update is routine. Skip it, and you are betting the company's books on a smooth evening.

❓ Common Questions (FAQ)

Is the TallyPrime 7.0 update free?

Yes, for licences with an active TSS (Tally Software Services) subscription — new releases are part of what TSS covers. If your TSS has expired, renew it first using your existing licence serial number; you do not need to buy a new licence.

Will updating to 7.0 delete or change my company data?

The update does not delete data. Your companies stay in the same data folder, and the first time 7.0 opens a company it migrates the data format. After migration the data works only with 7.0, which is why a full backup before updating is essential.

Can I go back to 6.1 after updating?

There is no downgrade option inside TallyPrime. Going back means reinstalling 6.1 and restoring the backup you took before the update — data already migrated to 7.0 and worked on there cannot be saved from 6.1. This is exactly why the backup step is not optional.
