Print Job Stuck in Queue Fix Clear a Stuck Print Queue in Windows

One job sits in the queue saying Deleting or Error, it refuses to cancel, and every new print lines up behind it doing nothing. Clear it properly — for good.

A stuck print job blocks the whole queue like a truck stalled in a single-lane road. Windows prints jobs strictly in order, so one bad job — usually a huge PDF, a corrupt document, or a job sent while the printer was off — stops everything behind it. Clicking Cancel works sometimes. When it does not, the job's file is stuck in the spooler folder, and you need the three-command clear-out that technicians use. Your documents are never at risk — the queue only holds copies.

The document named "Deleting" that never deletes is the signature of a stuck spool file. Fix 2 removes it by force — safely.

Try the Normal Cancel First

  1. Open Settings → Printers & scanners → your printer → Open print queue
  2. Right-click the stuck job → Cancel. To clear everything: Printer menu → Cancel All Documents
  3. Wait a full minute — large jobs take time to die
  4. If the job shows "Deleting" forever or returns after a restart, use Fix 2

The Three-Command Clear-Out That Always Works

Stop the spooler, delete its job files directly, start it again. The stuck job has nowhere to hide.

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. Run net stop spooler
  3. Run del /Q /F /S "%systemroot%\System32\spool\PRINTERS\*.*"
  4. Run net start spooler
  5. Open the print queue — it should now be completely empty. Print a test page to confirm
Command Prompt — Clearing the Queue by Force
net stop spooler
The Print Spooler service was stopped successfully.

del /Q /F /S "%systemroot%\System32\spool\PRINTERS\*.*"

net start spooler
The Print Spooler service was started successfully.
Run all three in order, as Administrator. The middle command deletes only the queue's job files — never your saved documents.

Stop the Same Job From Jamming Again

If one particular document jams the queue every time, the document or its rendering is the problem — not the queue.

  1. Print the document in smaller parts (10–15 pages at a time) to find the bad page
  2. For PDFs, use the reader's Print as image option in advanced print settings — this bypasses most rendering faults
  3. Save or export the file again from its original app; a repaired file usually prints cleanly
  4. Check the queue's job size before printing huge files — a 200 MB spool file for a 2 MB document signals a driver rendering problem

Queue Fills Up Again and Again? Look Deeper ⭐

  1. A queue that jams daily often means a failing driver — remove and reinstall the manufacturer's driver properly
  2. On shared office printers, one user's corrupt job can block everyone; clear it on the host PC, where the real queue lives
  3. Honest limit: if jobs reach the printer and stall there mid-page every time, watch the printer itself — memory errors on large jobs and failing formatter boards are hardware faults, and clearing Windows queues will never fix them

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why will a print job not cancel or delete?

Because the job's spool file is locked or corrupt, so the queue can show it but cannot remove it. Stopping the Print Spooler service releases the lock, and deleting the files in the spool PRINTERS folder removes the job completely.

Does clearing the print queue delete my document?

No. The queue holds temporary copies created only for printing. The original file — your Word document, PDF or photo — stays exactly where you saved it. After clearing the queue you simply print it again.

My print job disappears from the queue but nothing prints. Same problem?

Different problem. A job that vanishes without printing usually means it was sent to the wrong printer (for example a duplicate copy of the printer or Microsoft Print to PDF), or the printer is offline. Check which printer the job went to and the printer status before clearing anything.
