Windows Keeps Changing Default Printer Fix Stop Windows Managing Your Printer

You set your printer as default, and tomorrow Windows has quietly chosen a different one — your prints keep going to the wrong machine. One hidden toggle is the whole story.

This problem is not a fault — it is a feature working exactly as designed. Windows 10 and 11 ship with a setting called "Let Windows manage my default printer". While it is on, Windows automatically makes the last printer you used the default. Print once to the office printer or a PDF printer, and it becomes the default until you print somewhere else. If only one person uses one printer, you never notice. In every other setup it is maddening. The fix takes under a minute.

Printers and Scanners — The Default Keeps Moving

Wednesday — after visiting the other officeHP LaserJet on Floor 2
Let Windows manage my default printerOn — this is the cause
If your default follows your last print job around, the toggle is on. Turn it off once and the default stays where you put it.
1

Turn Off Let Windows Manage My Default Printer

  1. Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners (Windows 10: Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners)
  2. Scroll to Printer preferences
  3. Switch Let Windows manage my default printer to Off
  4. That is the whole cure for the moving default — now set your chosen printer in Fix 2
2

Set Your Printer as Default, Properly

  1. In the same Printers & scanners list, click the printer you actually want
  2. Click Set as default — note this button only appears when the manage toggle from Fix 1 is off
  3. The printer now shows Default under its name
  4. Print a test page and confirm it comes out of the right machine
3

Remove Duplicate and Ghost Printers

Half the "wrong printer" complaints are really duplicate queues — the same printer added twice, once by Windows and once by its own software, with jobs splitting between them.

  1. Look for entries like "Canon G3010" and "Canon G3010 (Copy 1)" in the printer list
  2. Keep the one that works and shows your model's proper driver; remove the copies
  3. Also remove printers for machines the office no longer owns — they only invite misdirected prints
4

For Admins — Lock the Default With the Registry ⭐

On shared or office PCs where users should not change the default at all, the classic behaviour can be enforced.

  1. Open Registry Editor and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
  2. The Device value holds the current default in the form: printer name, driver, port
  3. A value named LegacyDefaultPrinterMode set to 1 tells Windows to keep the default the user set instead of managing it
  4. Back up the key before editing, and remember per-user settings apply per login — set it for each account that needs it
🔴 Careful: if setting the default gives you error 0x00000709 instead of just changing back, that is a different fault — a registry permission or RPC problem — and it has its own dedicated fix on this site. Do not keep reinstalling the printer for it.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Windows change my default printer by itself?

Because the setting "Let Windows manage my default printer" is on. With it on, Windows sets your most recently used printer as the default automatically. Turn it off in Settings under Printers and scanners, then set your default once — it will stay.

The Set as default button is missing. Where is it?

Microsoft hides the Set as default button while Let Windows manage my default printer is switched on. Turn that toggle off first; the button then appears on the printer's page in Settings.

Will turning off the Windows manage setting break anything?

No. It only stops Windows from guessing. Your default printer simply stays the one you chose until you change it yourself. Printing, scanning and all printer features work exactly as before.
