The stripped ISO is free to download. Windows is not. This page explains the licence tiny10 still needs, the keys that honestly work, and the one download offer you should always refuse.
Almost every tiny10 question thread contains the same hopeful post: "no key needed, right?" Wrong — and the honest version of this project never claimed otherwise. This page covers the licence position in full: what tiny10 expects you to bring, how to check your activation in seconds, and what unactivated life and "pre-activated" downloads really mean.
Tiny10 does not include a Windows licence, and installing it does not activate anything. NTDEV's releases are modifications of Microsoft's code; the right to run Windows comes from a licence you own separately. Coverage of the project states it directly: tiny10 requires a Windows product key — without one, the system runs in an unactivated, trial-like state. Every guide in this set assumes you bring a genuine key, because that is the only legitimate version of this project.
slmgr.vbs /xpr — one line tells you whether the machine considers itself permanently activatedslmgr.vbs /dli and read the licence channel; it should say Retail or OEM, not a volume channel you have never heard ofAn unactivated Windows 10 does not stop working, which is why the temptation exists. What it does: shows an activation watermark on the desktop, locks personalisation settings (wallpaper, colours, themes through Settings), and sits outside the licence terms — on a business machine, that last point is the one that matters in an audit. On a spare home PC it is an untidy state; on anything connected to your livelihood it is a liability with a watermark on it. The price of a genuine key, weighed against the machine's remaining life, is usually the smallest number in the whole project.
Because it keeps appearing in search results, it gets its own section in every guide in this set: a tiny10 download advertised as "pre-activated" or "no key needed" has been modified by its uploader with an unauthorised activation tool. That means the file fails the trust test in the security guide on two counts at once — an unknown editor, and a tool designed to deceive a licensing system running with full privileges on your PC. Refuse it. The genuine project plus your genuine key is the entire legitimate offer, and it is enough.

▶️ Watch Full VideoNo. Tiny10 is a modified installation image only. It requires a genuine Windows product key — ideally the licence your old PC already owns — and without one it runs unactivated. The developer's project is the stripping work; the licence was always a separate Microsoft product.
Usually yes, if it is a genuine Windows 10 key or digital licence for that machine — enter it in Settings under Activation, or during setup, and verify with the slmgr command in this guide. Older Windows 7 or 8 keys are a different story: Microsoft closed that activation path in 2023, so treat any success as luck, not a plan.
Windows keeps running, with the activation watermark on the desktop and personalisation settings locked, and the installation remains unlicensed. For a short trial on a spare machine that is a tolerable state of affairs; as a permanent arrangement — especially on a work PC — it is neither legal nor tidy. Activate with a genuine key or choose a route, like Linux, that needs no key at all.
