The minimum requirements are easy. The honest compatibility check is harder: is your model on Google's certified list, and does everything work in the live test? Both checks, explained plainly.
Almost any old PC meets the headline requirements for Flex OS 2025 - a 64-bit processor, 4 GB RAM, 16 GB storage. That is necessary, but it is not the whole story. Google only guarantees ChromeOS Flex on models it has tested and certified, and untested hardware can have small but annoying faults. This page walks through both levels of checking, ending with the free live test that settles the question on your actual machine.
Google's published minimums are modest - but meeting them is not the same as being on Google's tested list. Both checks are explained below.
Google's published minimums for ChromeOS Flex are modest, which is the whole point of the product:
Most PCs from roughly 2010 onwards clear these bars on paper. Paper, however, is only the first check.
Google maintains a certified models list for ChromeOS Flex: specific laptops and desktops that Google has actually tested. A certified model gets two guarantees a random PC does not - the hardware is known to work, and the model receives automatic updates until a published end date shown on that list.
Before installing, search the certified list for your exact model. It takes two minutes and tells you more than any requirement table.
Plenty of non-certified PCs run ChromeOS Flex well - Google simply has not tested them, so nothing is promised. The usual casualties on untested hardware are small things: a fingerprint reader that does nothing, a webcam quirk, a Wi-Fi card that misbehaves, or sleep and wake problems. This is exactly why the live test in the next fix exists.
ChromeOS Flex can run live from the USB stick without installing. Use that as your real compatibility test:
If everything works live, it will work installed. If something important fails live, installing will not magically fix it.
Flex OS makes old PCs feel fast for browser work - it cannot add physical power. A machine with a dying hard disk, 2 GB of RAM or a failing fan will still be a dying machine with a lighter system on it. And a PC whose hardware is not 64-bit cannot run it at all. Set expectations by the hardware, not by the word 'fast' in a video title.

Check Google's certified models list for ChromeOS Flex and search your exact model name. If it is listed, your hardware is tested and the page also shows until when that model receives automatic updates. If it is not listed, the live Try it first test becomes your main check.
Some older Intel-based Macs can boot ChromeOS Flex, and the live mode is the safe way to find out on yours. Support is model-dependent and not broadly guaranteed, so test thoroughly - especially Wi-Fi, sound and sleep - before even thinking about installing.
