Flex OS is fast, free and official - and it still cannot do several things its fans quietly assume. The Play Store, Windows programs, dual boot and update limits, all graded honestly before you install.
Good tools deserve honest labels. Flex OS 2025 - Google ChromeOS Flex - is genuinely excellent at one job: turning an old PC into a fast, secure, browser-based machine. But the video title cannot fit the fine print, and the video itself pauses to explain one limit: the missing Google Play Store. Here is the complete honest list, so your decision rests on facts rather than on the word 'fast'.
None of these are hidden fine print - Google states the Play Store and compatibility limits openly. They only surprise people who installed on a title's promise.
This is the limitation the video itself stops to explain, and it deserves the same honesty here. Real Chromebooks can install Android apps from the Play Store. ChromeOS Flex cannot. There is no Play Store on Flex, no Android app support, and no setting or trick that adds it - it is a deliberate product decision by Google, not a bug in your installation.
If your plan for the old laptop involved Android apps, Flex OS is the wrong tool. A budget real Chromebook, or keeping the machine on Windows, serves that plan better.
Nothing with an .exe installer runs on Flex OS - not desktop Microsoft Office, not Tally, not Photoshop, not your office's Windows-only software, and not PC games. What you get instead are the web versions: Office on the web, Google Docs, webmail, and the thousands of tools that now live in a browser. For many people those are enough. For some, they honestly are not - and it is better to know that before the disk is erased than after.
Flex OS works offline for basic tasks - writing in Docs with offline mode on, viewing downloaded files - but its centre of gravity is online. Slow or absent internet makes it a much smaller machine than a Windows PC with local programs installed. Judge it by the connection it will actually live on.
On a certified model, Google has tested the hardware and stands behind it. On anything else, most things usually work, but individual parts - a webcam, a fingerprint reader, a particular Wi-Fi card - may not, and there is no one to complain to. This is a real limit, not boilerplate: it is why this set keeps pushing the Try it first live test.
ChromeOS Flex updates automatically - until it does not. Each certified model has a published end date for automatic updates on Google's list. A very old model may have a near or already-passed date, after which the system stops receiving updates and slowly becomes a security risk if kept online. Check your model's date before installing; it is printed on the same certified list.

▶️ Watch Full VideoGoogle designed Flex for reviving old Windows PCs and Macs, and Android app support is reserved for Chromebooks built and certified for it. The Flex product simply does not include the Play Store or the Android container, and there is no official way to add them.
There is no supported way to run Windows .exe software on ChromeOS Flex. On PCs with the optional Linux environment you can install Linux applications, but that is Linux software, not your Windows programs. If a specific Windows program is essential to you, keep a Windows PC for it.
Not your installed Windows games - they do not run. What does work is browser-based cloud gaming, where the game runs on a remote server and streams to Chrome. That depends entirely on your internet connection and the game's service, so treat it as a bonus, not a reason to install.
