License Count

Endpoint Central License Count Exceeded What Happens to Extra Endpoints

You imaged a new PC, installed the agent, and it refuses to be managed. The license counter filled up quietly behind you. Here is what the limit actually does - and what it does not do.

Hitting the license ceiling produces a very specific confusion: old machines work fine, new machines will not join. That split behaviour is by design, and ManageEngine documents it. This page explains the split, why your count filled faster than your headcount, and the cleanup that hands slots back before you spend anything.

License Limit Reached - Agent Behaviour (per ManageEngine FAQ)
Agents installed before the limitKeep working normally
New agent added after the limitWill not operate
Stale computers still in the consoleStill consume your count
The limit does not break what you already manage - it blocks what you try to add next. Example panel, behaviour per ManageEngine FAQ.

The Good News First - Nothing Already Working Stops

ManageEngine's FAQ answers this directly: if you have reached the license limit, existing agents continue to function normally. Your patching, inventory and remote control on already-managed computers do not suddenly switch off the day the counter fills up. What changes is growth: any new agents added after reaching the license limit will not operate. So the symptom to recognise is not "everything broke" - it is "the new laptop I just imaged will not come under management".

Why Your Count Filled Faster Than You Expected

Free Up Slots the Honest Way

  1. Open the License page from the profile icon and note the exact licensed count versus the count in use.
  2. Go to Agent - Computers and sort by last contact time. Anything silent for months is a removal candidate.
  3. Confirm each candidate is really gone - scrapped, reimaged under a new name, or replaced - then delete it from the Central Server. ManageEngine's own guidance for count discrepancies is exactly this: make sure removed computers are deleted from the server so the license count updates accurately.
  4. Recheck the License page. Freed slots are available for new agents immediately.

When Cleanup Is Not Enough - Buy the Difference

If every entry in the console is a real, working machine, there is nothing to free up, and the only honest routes are to increase your licensed count through ManageEngine or your partner, or to consciously choose which machines stay unmanaged. Do not install agents on more machines than you own and hope nobody notices - those extra agents simply will not operate, and unmanaged-but-imaged PCs are a patching blind spot. A short conversation with sales about your real count is cheaper than one unpatched server.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my existing computers stop being managed when I hit the limit?

No. Per ManageEngine's FAQ, existing agents continue to function normally after the license limit is reached. Only new agents added beyond the limit will not operate.

Removed computers still show in my count. How do I fix that?

Delete the removed computers from the Central Server console. ManageEngine's guidance for count discrepancies is to make sure removed computers are deleted from the server, which updates the license count accurately.

Do servers consume the same license count as desktops?

Servers count as endpoints too. ManageEngine identifies servers by their OS - Windows Server, Oracle Linux, or Red Hat Enterprise Linux with a server subscription - and in the free edition any number of servers is allowed only while the total endpoints stay within 25. Check current server pricing with sales before buying.

This guide is based on the Technical Anshu video on this topic. Counts shown in your console include everything still registered on the server - a five minute cleanup each quarter keeps surprises away.
