How to Count Endpoints Before Buying an Endpoint Central License

Quotes go wrong in a predictable way - one big number that mixes desktops, servers, phones and people. ManageEngine licenses those buckets differently. Count them differently.

The cheapest licensing mistake is buying the wrong shape of license, and it happens before any money moves - at the counting stage. This page mirrors how ManageEngine itself defines the buckets: endpoints on the server, server operating systems, mobile devices, and the technician accounts that are licensed in their own right.

Counting Endpoints - The Three Buckets
WorkstationsDesktops and laptops with the agent
ServersWindows Server OS, Oracle Linux, RHEL server subscription
Mobile devicesManaged through the MDM capability of higher editions

One quote, three different buckets. Count each bucket separately or the quote will be wrong.
1

Start From the Console, Not From Memory

Never quote from a spreadsheet of what you think the network looks like. Open the console, go to Agent - Computers, and count what is actually registered. Then clean before you count: delete computers that were scrapped, replaced or reimaged, because stale entries inflate both your console count and any quote built on it. Your real number is the count that remains after that cleanup - plus the machines you are genuinely about to add this quarter.

2

Separate the Servers From the Workstations

Endpoint Central treats servers as their own licensing concern. Per ManageEngine's FAQ, a machine counts as a server if it runs a Windows Server operating system, Oracle Linux, or Red Hat Enterprise Linux with a Server subscription - including virtual machines with those systems. You can spot most of them in the console by filtering the computer list by operating system with server tags. Count servers as their own line in your purchase notes: pricing and licensing treatment for servers differs from ordinary workstations, and mixing them into one number is how quotes come back wrong.

3

Mobile Devices Are a Different Bucket Again

Phones and tablets do not sneak into the desktop count. Mobile device management in Endpoint Central lives in the higher editions and add-on capabilities, so mobiles are quoted separately from computers. If your plan includes managing staff phones, say so explicitly when requesting the quote and give the mobile count as its own number. If it does not, leave mobiles out entirely rather than padding the computer count "just in case" - padding is money spent on slots nothing will use.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Endpoint Central decide a machine is a server?

By its operating system: Windows Server OS, Oracle Linux, or Red Hat Enterprise Linux with a Server subscription, including virtual machines running those systems. ManageEngine recommends buying server licenses for Linux machines you deploy as servers.

Do disabled user accounts count against my license?

Yes. ManageEngine's FAQ confirms disabled users are included in the license count, so delete accounts of people who have left instead of only disabling them.

How many endpoints does the Free edition really cover?

Up to 25 endpoints in total with 1 technician - and that total can include servers, as long as the overall endpoint count stays within 25. Paid tiers start at 50 endpoints.
