Excel Add Ins Causing Freezing Find the Bad Add In With Safe Mode
Excel hangs the moment it opens, freezes when you type, or crashes when you save — yet the same file works on another PC. Nine times out of ten, an add-in is doing this. Here is the two-minute test that proves it, and the clean way to remove the guilty one.

Add-ins are small programs that plug into Excel: PDF makers, accounting exports, bank statement tools, old macro packs. They load with Excel and run inside it, so when one breaks — after an Office update, a Windows update, or a version mismatch — Excel itself looks broken. The tell-tale sign: the freeze happens in every file, even a blank one. The diagnosis is beautifully simple and takes two minutes: start Excel in Safe Mode, where no add-ins load at all. If the freeze vanishes, you have your answer — then it is just a matter of finding which add-in it was.
Run — starting Excel in Safe Mode
excel /safe
Normal start: freezes on splash screen
Safe Mode: opens instantly, typing smooth
Verdict: an add-in is the cause — find which one.
Safe Mode loads Excel with zero add-ins. A smooth Safe Mode session is proof the problem is an add-in, not Excel.
1
Run the Safe Mode Split-Test
This one test separates add-in problems from every other kind of Excel problem. Do it before changing anything.
Close Excel completely — check Task Manager that no EXCEL.EXE process is still running
Press Windows + R, type excel /safe exactly, and press Enter
The title bar shows Microsoft Excel - Safe Mode. Type, scroll, open your regular file — test properly for a minute
Smooth in Safe Mode = add-in problem confirmed. Still frozen = the cause is elsewhere; look at calculation, formatting or the printer driver instead
2
Disable All COM Add-Ins, Then Bring Them Back One by One
COM add-ins are the heavyweight kind — they integrate deepest and freeze hardest. The one-by-one method below is slower than guessing, but it never guesses wrong.
Start Excel normally. Go to File → Options → Add-ins
At the bottom, set Manage: COM Add-ins and click Go
Write down or photograph the ticked list first, then untick everything and click OK
Restart Excel and confirm it is fast. Then re-enable one add-in, restart, and test. Repeat — the freeze returns with the guilty add-in
3
Check the Second List — Excel Add-Ins and Startup Folders
If COM add-ins are all innocent, the culprit may be an older-style Excel add-in or a file hiding in a startup folder that loads silently with Excel.
Back in File → Options → Add-ins, set Manage: Excel Add-ins → Go, and apply the same untick-and-test method
Now check the startup folders: anything placed in the XLSTART folder opens with Excel. Find it via File → Options → Trust Center → Trust Center Settings → Trusted Locations, or simply search your disk for XLSTART
Move any file you find there to the Desktop temporarily and restart Excel
Also empty the alternate startup folder if one is set under Options → Advanced → General
4
Decide the Guilty Add-In's Fate — Update, Repair or Remove
Finding the bad add-in is diagnosis, not the cure. What you do next depends on whether you actually need it.
You need it (accounting export, office tool): visit its maker's website and install the newest version — add-ins commonly break because Office updated and they did not
You do not need it: uninstall it properly from Settings → Apps, rather than leaving it disabled forever
It came with a printer, scanner or PDF suite: those bundled add-ins are frequent offenders — update or remove the parent software
After any change, restart Excel and work normally for a day before declaring victory
5
If Safe Mode Did Not Help, Stop Blaming Add-Ins
Honesty matters in troubleshooting: if Excel freezes inside Safe Mode too, add-ins are innocent and more testing there wastes your time.
Blank workbook also freezes in Safe Mode → repair Office from Settings → Apps → Microsoft Office → Modify
Only one file freezes → the problem is in the file: links, formatting, or calculation chains
Freezing happens while scrolling or printing → test the graphics acceleration setting and the default printer driver
🔴 Do not delete add-in files by hand from Program Files. A half-removed add-in leaves registry entries that keep trying to load it, and Excel can end up slower than before. Always disable first to diagnose, then uninstall through Settings → Apps or the maker's own uninstaller.
🎥 Watch the Complete Fix in the Video
The video covers the complete slow-Excel diagnosis — this split-test thinking is exactly how it starts.
It starts Excel with all add-ins, custom toolbars and startup-folder files disabled, and it opens no workbook automatically. It changes nothing permanently and installs nothing — close Excel and start it normally, and everything returns. It is purely a diagnostic mode.
Excel freezes only when I open files from email. Still an add-in?
Possibly, but first check Protected View and your antivirus. Add-ins typically freeze Excel in every situation, including blank files. If the freeze follows one file or one source, test that file on another PC before removing add-ins.
I disabled an add-in and Excel is fast. Can I just leave it disabled forever?
You can — a disabled add-in does no harm. But the cleaner finish is to update it (if you use it) or uninstall it (if you do not), so a future Office repair or update does not quietly re-enable a broken version.
