Excel Not Responding When Saving to OneDrive or SharePoint
Editing is fine. The freeze arrives at the exact moment you press Ctrl+S on a OneDrive or SharePoint file. That timing is the diagnosis — the save is a network conversation, and something in it is stalling. Here is what is really happening, and the workflow that ends the pain.

Saving locally is one disk write. Saving to OneDrive or SharePoint is a negotiation: Excel talks to the sync client or the server, checks who else has the file open, uploads changes, and waits for confirmation. A slow network, a paused or struggling sync client, a co-authoring conflict, or an over-eager antivirus can each freeze that conversation mid-sentence — and Excel shows Not Responding while it waits. Honesty upfront: some of this is the nature of cloud files on a weak connection, and no setting abolishes it. But the order of checks below separates the fixable stalls from the unavoidable ones, and the local-first workflow protects your work either way.
Microsoft Excel — Ctrl+S on a SharePoint file
Saving...
Microsoft Excel is not responding
Upload pending in OneDrive: Report.xlsx — sync problems
Co-authors online: 2
Connection: office Wi-Fi, weak signal
A save-time-only freeze on a cloud file points at the upload conversation — sync client, network or a co-authoring conflict.
1
First, Do Not Force-Close — and Recover Right If You Must
A frozen save is often a slow save. Force-closing mid-upload is how files actually get damaged, so give a genuine stall time before concluding anything.
Wait a full two minutes — a large workbook on a weak link can legitimately take that long, and Excel shows Not Responding while it waits
Check the OneDrive icon in the system tray: if it shows uploading with progress, the save is alive — let it finish
If you truly must close, reopen Excel afterwards and use File → Open → Recovered / the Document Recovery pane — AutoRecover usually holds a recent copy
Note the exact moment of the freeze (opening, editing, saving) — save-only freezes are what this page is about
2
Check the Sync Client's Health Before Blaming Excel
For OneDrive files, Excel hands the save to the sync client. A paused, signed-out or error-stuck client makes every save hang.
Click the OneDrive tray icon and confirm it says up to date, or shows exactly which file has a sync problem
Make sure sync is not paused, and that you are still signed in — a changed password silently signs the client out
Resolve flagged conflicts: OneDrive creates copies named with the PC name when two versions collide. Pick the real one, merge the other manually, delete the duplicate
Restart the sync client (right-click the tray icon → Close OneDrive, then start it again from the Start menu) and test a save on a small file
3
Test the Two Usual Suspects — Network and Co-Authoring
Two environmental causes explain most remaining save stalls. Each has a clean test.
Network: try the same save on a wired connection or a stronger Wi-Fi position. Large workbooks with images on weak Wi-Fi stall as a matter of physics, not faults
Co-authoring: if colleagues have the file open, ask them to close it and test your save alone. Version conflicts and lock negotiation can make saves crawl while several people edit a heavy file
Browser test: open the file in Excel for the web from SharePoint or OneDrive. If web editing saves happily while desktop Excel stalls, the desktop-to-cloud path on your PC is the problem, not the file or the service
4
Adopt the Local-First Workflow for Heavy Files
For big, important workbooks, this workflow removes cloud stalls from your working day entirely, while keeping the cloud copy as the shared final version.
Download or save the working copy to a local folder that OneDrive backs up (Desktop or Documents inside OneDrive's folder keeps sync protection without live co-authoring stalls) — or fully local for the heaviest models
Edit and save locally all day with Ctrl + S — saves are instant and cannot freeze on network weather
At a natural break, upload the finished version to SharePoint or OneDrive, replacing the shared copy, and confirm the upload completes before closing
Be honest about the trade-off: while you work locally, colleagues see the older shared version. For files under active co-authoring, agree this hand-off in the team instead of surprising each other
🔴 The golden rule of cloud files: never keep the only copy of critical work in a state where one frozen save can hurt it. AutoRecover, a local working copy, or OneDrive's version history (right-click the file in OneDrive → Version history) — make sure at least one safety net exists before you need it.

Watch the video for the full hanging diagnosis — the same method tells a save stall from a dying file.
Why does Excel freeze only when saving, and only on cloud files?
Because a cloud save is a conversation with the sync client or server — lock checks, change upload, confirmation — while a local save is a single disk write. If the sync client is paused or error-stuck, the network is weak, or co-authors hold the file, that conversation stalls and Excel shows Not Responding while it waits.
Is my file corrupted after a frozen save?
Usually not. Modern Office protects the original until the new version is fully written, and AutoRecover plus OneDrive version history give you two more nets. Reopen the file, check the last-saved time, and compare against the recovered copy before assuming damage.
Should I turn off AutoSave for SharePoint files?
AutoSave is genuinely useful for light files and real co-authoring. For very heavy workbooks on a weak connection it can make editing feel like a series of stalls, because every change triggers an upload cycle. For those files the local-first workflow in Fix 4 is the better pattern — finish locally, then publish the completed version.
