📋 Overview & Review Walkthrough
What AnkhTech Live OS Is
AnkhTech Live OS is a bootable Windows PE (WinPE) live environment: you write its ISO to a USB drive, boot any PC or laptop from that drive, and instead of the installed Windows you get a complete temporary desktop loaded with repair and recovery programs. Nothing is installed on the machine — when you shut down, the PC is exactly as it was. It belongs to the same family of rescue toolkits as WinPE Sergei Strelec and MediCat USB, and it is built for the jobs a normal Windows cannot do on itself: rescuing data from a PC that will not boot, fixing partitions and boot problems, backing up or imaging a drive, and checking hardware.
Full and Mini — Two Editions in One ISO
One AnkhTech ISO carries two systems, and you pick which one to boot: AnkhTech Full, the complete edition with the entire program library, and AnkhTech Mini, a cut-down edition that loads less and is meant for weaker or older machines with little RAM. This two-in-one design is the first answer to the "lightweight" question in the video's title — if the Full edition feels heavy on an old PC, the Mini edition is the same toolkit philosophy with a much smaller footprint.
Booting Into the Live Desktop
The review boots the USB and goes through the live session from power-on to desktop. Because WinPE loads itself into RAM and runs from there, the desktop does not depend on the health of the PC's own Windows installation at all — a machine whose Windows is corrupt or missing can still reach this desktop. Once loaded, the interface is deliberately familiar: it looks like an original Microsoft Windows desktop, with a Start Menu, taskbar and desktop icons, so there is almost nothing new to learn before you can start working.
The Tool Library — Categories Tour
All programs live in the Start Menu, organised by category. The tour in the video covers the same category structure the toolkit is known for:
Backup and Restore — imaging tools such as Acronis True Image, AOMEI Backupper, Macrium Reflect and Symantec Ghost, for cloning and restoring whole drives. Data Recovery — Recuva, Active@ Partition Recovery and similar tools for deleted files and lost partitions. Disk Tools — partition managers and health tools such as AOMEI Partition Assistant, MiniTool Partition Wizard, CrystalDiskInfo, CrystalDiskMark, Hard Disk Sentinel and Victoria. Antivirus — scanners including Malwarebytes, ESET Online Scanner and McAfee Stinger for cleaning an infected system from outside. Hardware Info — AIDA64, CPU-Z, HWMonitor, HWiNFO, Core Temp and Speccy for identifying and testing components. File Tools and System Tools — 7-Zip, the Everything search tool, Explorer++, plus Windows' own administrative tools (Computer Management, Device Manager, Disk Management, Services) and utilities like BOOTICE, DISM++ and WinNTSetup for boot repair and Windows installation work.
Network and Internet Support
A repair environment is far more useful when it can go online, and AnkhTech includes network support and a Firefox browser. With a wired Ethernet connection, the internet is already working after boot — plug the cable in and browse. On WiFi, you start the connection from the WiFi icon on the desktop. That makes the live session practical for downloading a missing driver, looking up an error, or copying rescued data to a network location instead of a second USB drive.
The Speed Test — Lightweight and Fast?
The second half of the video is the hands-on test: boot time, how quickly the desktop and Start Menu respond, and how fast programs actually open and run in the live session. Two things work in AnkhTech's favour here. First, a WinPE system runs from RAM, so once it has loaded, programs are not waiting on a slow or damaged hard disk. Second, the Mini edition exists precisely for machines where the Full edition's larger library is too much. Watch the video for the live timings and how the test machine behaves — that real-world feel, not the feature list, is what this review is judging.
Honest Limits to Know
It is also a live environment, not a replacement for an installed Windows: settings and files saved inside the session are not the point, sessions end when you reboot, and some bundled programs are trial or older versions. Very new hardware can occasionally miss a storage or network driver in any WinPE build — which is exactly why the video's full test on a real machine matters.
Verdict — Who It Suits
For IT support work and serious home troubleshooting, AnkhTech Live OS earns its place on a toolkit USB: two editions in one ISO, a genuinely Windows-like desktop, a deep program library across backup, recovery, disk, antivirus and diagnostics, and working network support. The Mini edition makes it usable on the old, low-RAM machines that technicians meet most often. If you only need one simple job — say, making a Windows installer — a plain official ISO is the cleaner tool; but as an all-in-one rescue environment, this is one of the strongest WinPE builds in its class, alongside Strelec and MediCat.
