📋 Overview & Step-by-Step Guide
Update Ventoy on Windows — Without Losing Your ISO Files
Download the latest Ventoy package from the official Ventoy website and extract the zip. Open the folder and run Ventoy2Disk.exe, then select your USB drive in the device list. The window shows two versions: the version in the package and the version currently installed on the device.
Click the Update button (not Install). Update upgrades only the Ventoy core on the small boot partition — the big data partition and every ISO file you have copied on the USB stay exactly as they are, so there is no need to copy your files again after updating.
Update Ventoy on Linux from the Terminal
On Linux, extract the Ventoy package, open a terminal inside the extracted folder, and run the update command below. Replace sdX with your USB device (for example sdb) — the -u flag is update mode, so your files on the USB are preserved, just like the Update button on Windows.
sudo sh Ventoy2Disk.sh -u /dev/sdX
Fix the Secure Boot Error — Enroll the Ventoy Key
Ventoy supports Secure Boot, but on the first boot on a Secure Boot PC you can get the error "Verification failed: (15) Access Denied". You do not need to turn Secure Boot off — enroll Ventoy's key once, and it boots normally from then on:
- On the error screen, press OK / Enter to open MokManager.
- Select Enroll key from disk.
- Choose the small VTOYEFI partition and select the file
ENROLL_THIS_KEY_IN_MOKMANAGER.cer. - Confirm with Continue → Yes, then reboot.
The key is now stored in the machine's Mok list, so Ventoy boots with Secure Boot still enabled — and you only have to do this one time per PC.
Fix ISO Files Not Showing in the Ventoy Menu
If you copied an ISO to the USB but it does not appear in the Ventoy boot menu, check these points — this is the file-detection part of the guide:
- Right partition: files must be copied to the big data partition (labelled Ventoy) — not to the small 32 MB VTOYEFI partition.
- Supported file types: Ventoy detects
.iso,.wimand.imgfiles (it also supports VHD/VHDX and EFI files). A file with any other extension will not be listed. - Clean file name: rename the file to a simple name without spaces or special characters — for example
windows11.iso— then copy it again. - Complete copy: if the copy was interrupted, the file is corrupt — delete it and copy a fresh, complete file, and safely eject the USB before removing it.
Files can sit in the root of the partition or inside folders — Ventoy scans the whole data partition and lists every supported file it finds in the menu.
