ManageEngine Browser Security Guide
Secure every office browser from one console with ManageEngine Browser Security Plus: control extensions, block malicious sites, stop data leaks and check CIS compliance scores — in the order that works, pilot first.
📑Chapters
- First, find out which browsers you actually have — the console inventory per computer
- Create policy groups instead of one giant rule — extensions, threat protection, data leakage, customisation
- Allow only approved extensions — audit first, then deploy a short allow list
- Turn on threat protection and web filtering — locked safe browsing, blocked categories, web isolation
- Apply the data leakage prevention basics — password saving, autofill and uploads
- Check the CIS compliance score and fix the red machines, worst first
- What this tool honestly cannot do — personal devices, USB browsers, and the limits
📋 Overview & Step-by-Step Guide
Find Out Which Browsers Are Actually Installed
You cannot secure what you have not counted. Browser Security Plus puts an agent on each office computer and reports every browser installed there — including the ones nobody in IT installed, such as an old Firefox, a portable browser sitting in a Downloads folder, or three browsers where the office standard says one.
Deploy the agent to a small pilot group first — one department is enough — then open the console and read the browser inventory per computer. Note the browsers that are outdated or not part of your office standard.
Create Policy Groups Instead of One Giant Rule
ManageEngine organises browser security as policies that you build once and deploy to groups of computers. The policy areas follow the real risks: extensions, threat protection, data leakage prevention, and browser customisation — homepage, bookmarks and standard settings, so every PC starts from the same clean state.
Start with the pilot group, watch what breaks for a week, then widen the deployment.
Allow Only Approved Extensions
Extensions are small programs that run inside the browser with wide permissions — many can read the content of every page the user opens. Browser Security Plus lets you silently distribute the approved ones — your password manager, your PDF tool — block the rest, and see the permission list of anything already installed.
Audit the current extension list from the console before blocking anything, build a short allow list together with the staff who actually use the extensions, then deploy the allow list to the pilot group and afterwards to everyone.
Turn On Threat Protection and Web Filtering
This is the shield against the link in the fake invoice email. Threat protection keeps the browser's own defences — Safe Browsing in Chrome, SmartScreen in Edge — switched on and locked, so a user cannot turn them off.
Web filtering blocks categories of sites the office has no business visiting, and web isolation can open an untrusted site inside a sandboxed window, so a drive-by download never lands on the real PC. Force safe browsing and SmartScreen on for every managed browser, block the obviously dangerous categories first — malware, phishing and newly registered domains — and use isolation for unknown sites instead of a hard block where your edition offers it.
Apply the Data Leakage Prevention Basics
The same browser that opens your office apps can quietly upload your files to a personal cloud drive. The data leakage policies cover the everyday leaks: password saving in the browser, autofill of card and address data, and which sites may receive uploads.
You do not need the strictest setting on day one — you need the setting your office can actually live with, applied to every PC instead of only the three PCs whose users remembered to configure it themselves.
Check the CIS Compliance Score and Fix the Red Machines
Browser Security Plus benchmarks each computer's browser settings against the CIS (Center for Internet Security) and STIG standards and grades the machine — highly vulnerable, vulnerable, low risk or secure. That turns browser security from a feeling into a list.
Sort the computers by their score, worst first. Open a red machine and read exactly which settings failed the benchmark, fix them from the console where the product allows, and re-check the score. That before-and-after number is also the easiest report you will ever show your boss — it proves the work did something.
Know What This Tool Honestly Cannot Do
Browser Security Plus manages browsers on computers that have its agent — office desktops and laptops you own. It does not reach a staff member's personal phone or home PC, it does not watch a browser a user runs from a USB stick outside the managed list in the same way, and it does not replace your antivirus or your firewall.
A blocked user with a personal laptop and a phone hotspot still has a door — it is just no longer the office's door, and no longer the office's data, if your other policies are doing their job. Use the console to close the doors you own, and use a written office policy for the rest.
