Prevent Data Leakage ⚠️ ManageEngine DLP Setup
Office data quietly walks out on pen drives, personal email and cloud uploads. This video sets up ManageEngine Endpoint Central DLP the fair way — device control, trusted devices, file rules, and audit first — so sensitive files stay inside the office.

📋 Overview & Step-by-Step Guide
Know How Data Leaves the Office
Data leakage in a small office rarely looks like hacking. A staff member copies the client list to a pen drive, forwards a quotation to a personal email ID, or uploads office files to a personal cloud account — and the data is gone without anyone noticing. DLP (Data Loss Prevention) is the control layer that watches and restricts exactly these exit routes.
Open the DLP Controls in Endpoint Central
In ManageEngine Endpoint Central, the DLP side works through the agent already installed on the office PCs: device control governs removable devices like USB storage, trusted devices lists the specific devices that stay allowed, and file rules govern what happens when sensitive files are copied, attached or uploaded. Everything is configured once in the central console and pushed to the PCs as a policy.
Start in Audit Mode — Monitor Before You Block
The video's approach is audit first: turn on monitoring and file-access tracking before enforcing any block. For the first days you simply see the reality — which PCs copy files to pen drives, which files move, and how often — so the final rules are based on facts, not guesses.
Set Device Control for Pen Drives and Removable Storage
Device control is the first hard rule: unknown USB storage devices are blocked, or made read-only where a full block is too strict. A user can still read from an outside pen drive where you allow it, but office files cannot be written out to it. Keyboards, mice and other non-storage devices are not the target — the rule is about storage that can carry data away.
Add Trusted Devices for Approved Pen Drives
A total USB ban stops real work too, so the company keeps a small set of approved pen drives and registers them as trusted devices. Only those specific devices work for writing; every other pen drive stays blocked. If a trusted drive is lost, remove it from the trusted list immediately — the rule is only as strong as the list is current.
Create File Rules for Sensitive Data
Device control handles the pen drive route; file rules handle the file itself. Define what counts as sensitive — the file types, folders or named documents that matter to the business — and set what may happen to them: copying to removable storage, attaching to personal email or uploading through the browser can be blocked or at least audited and alerted, while normal internal work continues.
Deploy the Policy to a Pilot Group First
Do not push the finished policy to every PC on day one. Apply it to a small pilot group, watch what breaks, and fix the rules before the full rollout. The agents pick up the policy from the Endpoint Central server, so no desk visit is needed for each machine.
Read the Audit Reports, Then Enforce
With audit data in hand, the final pass is simple: check the reports for who copied what and where, confirm the trusted-device list matches reality, and only then switch the rules from audit to enforce. Keep reviewing the reports regularly — the log is also your proof of what happened if data ever does go missing.
