Stop Chrome Opening PDFs Automatically 🔥 Fix This Annoying Setting
You click a PDF link to save the file — and Chrome opens it in its own viewer tab instead. The fix is a single setting: tell Chrome to download PDFs instead of opening them.

📋 Overview & Step-by-Step Guide
Open Chrome's PDF Documents Settings Page
Chrome has a dedicated settings page for PDF behaviour. The menu route: click the three-dot menu (⋮) → Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → scroll down to Additional content settings → PDF documents.
Or skip the clicking — paste this address into Chrome's address bar and press Enter:
chrome://settings/content/pdfDocuments
Select "Download PDFs" — The One Setting
The PDF documents page shows two choices: Open PDFs in Chrome (the default, and the reason PDFs keep opening in a viewer tab) and Download PDFs. Select Download PDFs. That is the entire fix — there is no Save button; Chrome applies the choice the moment you select it, and it stays set for every site until you change it back.
Test the Fix on Any PDF Link
Go to any website and click a PDF link. Instead of a viewer tab opening, the file now downloads straight to your PC like any other download, and you can open it afterwards in whichever PDF reader you prefer.
What This Setting Does Not Change
Switch Back to the Chrome Viewer Anytime
Changed your mind? Open the same page — chrome://settings/content/pdfDocuments — and select Open PDFs in Chrome again. PDFs go back to opening in Chrome's viewer tab immediately, exactly as before. Nothing is uninstalled and nothing is lost either way.
