Ventoy vs Rufus 🔥 Which Bootable Tool Is Best?

Two free tools, two completely different ideas: Ventoy turns one pendrive into a multiboot library of ISOs, while Rufus writes one clean install image at a time. Here is the honest comparison — Secure Boot behaviour, Windows 11 bypass options and real speed — so you pick the right tool for your job.

📋 Overview & Step-by-Step Guide

1

The Core Difference: Multi-ISO vs Single-ISO

Everything in this comparison comes down to one idea. Ventoy is a multi-ISO boot tool: one USB drive can hold many ISO files at the same time, and at boot you get a menu to choose which one to start. Rufus is a single-ISO writer: it writes one image onto the drive, and that drive boots only that one system. Neither approach is wrong — they are built for different kinds of work.

2

How Ventoy Works: Install Once, Copy ISOs

With Ventoy you run the installer (Ventoy2Disk) on the USB drive one time. After that, adding a system is just file copying: copy any supported ISO, WIM or IMG file onto the drive like a normal file — no extraction, no rewriting. Boot from the drive and Ventoy shows a menu listing every file on it. To remove a system, simply delete its file. The rest of the drive stays usable for normal files too, so one large pendrive becomes a complete technician's library.

💡 Updating Ventoy: when a new Ventoy version comes out, use the Update option in Ventoy2Disk instead of Install — it upgrades Ventoy on the drive without deleting your ISO files.
3

How Rufus Works: Write One ISO at a Time

Rufus takes the classic approach: select the USB device, select one ISO, choose the partition scheme (GPT for UEFI systems, MBR for old BIOS systems), and press Start. Rufus formats the drive and writes that single image onto it, producing a clean, standard bootable drive — exactly the kind of media Windows setup expects. If you later want a different system on that drive, you run Rufus again and the drive is reformatted and rewritten.

⚠️ Both tools erase the drive: Ventoy's first install and every Rufus write format the USB drive. Back up anything important on the pendrive before you start.
4

Secure Boot Behaviour

On modern PCs with Secure Boot enabled, the two tools behave differently. Ventoy supports Secure Boot, but on a PC that has never seen Ventoy before, the first boot can ask you to enrol a key through the MokManager screen (the ENROLL_THIS_KEY_IN_MOKMANAGER.cer file) — a one-time step per PC, after which Ventoy boots normally with Secure Boot on. Rufus writes standard Microsoft-signed boot files, so a Rufus-made Windows drive normally boots on Secure Boot PCs with no extra step at all.

5

Windows 11 Bypass Options

This is where Rufus is famous. When you write a Windows 11 ISO with Rufus, it offers options to remove the TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and RAM requirement checks and to skip the forced Microsoft-account sign-in during setup — helpful when installing on older hardware. Ventoy plays a different role: it boots the ISO as it is, without adding its own requirement-bypass options, so the bypass question does not arise at the Ventoy layer at all. If your main job is installing Windows 11 on machines that don't meet the official checks, Rufus's built-in options are the deciding feature.

💡 Keep it official: download Windows ISOs only from Microsoft's official download page, whichever tool you use to write them.
6

Speed, Updates and Changing Your Mind

For a single install, Rufus is quick: one write and the drive is ready. The cost appears later — every new system means a full reformat and rewrite. Ventoy's setup takes a couple of minutes once, and after that, changing your library is as fast as copying files, and a Ventoy update keeps all your ISOs in place. Over months of real use — new Windows builds, Linux distros, rescue environments — that difference adds up: Rufus optimises the one write, Ventoy optimises every change after it.

7

The Verdict: Which One Should You Pick?

Pick Ventoy if you are an IT support person, a technician, or anyone who regularly boots many different systems: one pendrive holding Windows, Linux and rescue tools, updated by simple file copy. Pick Rufus if your job is one clean Windows installation — especially on a Secure Boot PC or older hardware where its Windows 11 bypass options matter — and you want standard install media with nothing extra. Most professionals honestly keep both: Rufus to prepare a dedicated install drive, Ventoy as the everyday multiboot library.
