Install Microsoft Office on Ubuntu in 1 Minute 😳 Using Wine
Microsoft Office running on Ubuntu — no dual boot, no virtual machine. The trick is a separate 32-bit Wine prefix, the winetricks components Office depends on, and then the Office installer itself — with an honest note on which versions work and where activation fails.

📋 Overview & Step-by-Step Guide
Enable 32-Bit Support and Update Ubuntu
The Office versions that run well under Wine are 32-bit programs, and Ubuntu needs its 32-bit architecture enabled before Wine can install the 32-bit libraries they rely on. Open a terminal and run:
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt update
The first command switches on the i386 architecture; the second refreshes the package lists so the new 32-bit packages become available.
Install Wine and Winetricks
Now install Wine — both the 64-bit and 32-bit builds — together with Winetricks, the helper tool that adds the extra Windows components Office needs:
sudo apt install wine64 wine32 winetricks
wine --version
The wine --version check at the end confirms Wine is installed and shows which version you are running.
Create a Separate 32-Bit Prefix for Office
Do not install Office into Wine's default prefix. Give it its own clean, dedicated 32-bit environment — a folder called .wine-office in your home directory — and open its configuration:
WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine-office winecfg
On the first run Wine builds the new prefix (it may ask to install the Mono and Gecko support packages — accept them), then the Wine configuration window opens. Leave the settings as they are and click OK. A separate prefix matters: if anything breaks later, you can delete just this folder and start Office over without touching anything else on the system.
Add the Components Office Needs with Winetricks
Office's installer expects certain Windows libraries and fonts to already be present. Open Winetricks against the Office prefix — pointing it at the same WINEPREFIX is what keeps everything inside .wine-office:
WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine-office winetricks
In the Winetricks window, choose the default prefix actions and install the Windows DLLs/components and fonts Office depends on — the usual requirements for Office installers of this generation are the core fonts, MSXML 6 and the RichEdit control. Let each component finish before starting the next one.
Run the Office Installer in the Prefix
With the prefix prepared, start your Office setup through Wine, again with the same prefix variable so Office lands inside .wine-office. Replace the path with the real location of your own setup.exe:
WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine-office wine /path/to/Office/setup.exe
From here the installer behaves like it does on Windows: accept the terms, enter your product key if you have one, and let the installation complete.
Launch Office — and Know the Honest Limits
After installation, Word, Excel and PowerPoint appear in Ubuntu's applications menu like normal apps. The first launch takes a little longer while Wine finishes configuring the prefix; later launches are quick.
Now the honest part, exactly as the video puts it. Which versions work: Office 2010 is the version that runs best under Wine; Office 2013 is hit-and-miss depending on the build; Office 2016 and the Microsoft 365 desktop apps generally do not install or run properly this way. Where it fails: activation is the weak point — Office frequently cannot complete activation under Wine even with a genuine key, so treat this setup as a way to open and work on documents, not as a guaranteed activated Office.
