📋 Overview & Step-by-Step Guide

1

Create a Free OpenDNS Account

Start by creating a free OpenDNS account. The account is what gives you the free dashboard — the place where you register your network, choose which website categories get blocked, and see the protection working. Sign in at dashboard.opendns.com once the account is ready.

📌 Why the router, and not each device? DNS is the phone book every device uses to find websites. If the router itself points to OpenDNS, every phone, laptop, TV and tablet on the network is filtered automatically — nothing has to be installed on any device.
2

Open Your Router's Admin Page

Connect to your own network, open a browser and type your router's admin address. For most home routers it is one of these two:

192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1

Log in with the router's admin username and password (printed on the sticker on the router if you have never changed it). This is the control panel where the DNS change will be made.

3

Enter the OpenDNS DNS Addresses

Inside the router settings, find the DNS server fields — they are usually under the Internet / WAN setup, or under the LAN / DHCP settings, depending on the router brand. Replace whatever is there with the two OpenDNS addresses:

Primary DNS: 208.67.222.222
Secondary DNS: 208.67.220.220

Entering the addresses on the router (instead of on one PC) is the key move — the router hands these DNS servers to every device that joins the network.

4

Save the Settings and Restart the Router

Save / apply the new DNS settings and restart the router so every device picks up the change cleanly. Devices that stay connected may hold on to the old DNS for a while — reconnecting them (or a quick restart of the device) forces them onto OpenDNS immediately.

5

Add Your Network in the OpenDNS Dashboard

Go back to the OpenDNS dashboard and add your network. The dashboard recognises your connection by the public IP address your home is currently using. Registering the network is what links your router's DNS traffic to YOUR filtering settings — without this step, OpenDNS resolves names but does not know which rules are yours.

✅ Home internet connections usually have a changing (dynamic) public IP. If your filtering ever seems to stop applying, the first thing to check is whether the IP registered in the dashboard still matches the one your connection has now.
6

Choose Your Filtering Level

Now pick how much you want filtered. In the dashboard settings for your network you choose the web content filtering level and the categories of websites to block for the whole network. Phishing protection is a core part of the service — known phishing sites are blocked so a fake banking or login page never even loads.

📌 Start with a moderate filtering level and adjust after a few days of normal use. Blocking too aggressively on day one is the most common reason families switch the whole thing back off.
7

Flush the DNS Cache on Your PC

Your PC remembers recent website lookups in its own DNS cache, so an old result can survive the router change for a while. Clear it so the PC asks OpenDNS fresh. Open Command Prompt and run:

Command Prompt
ipconfig /flushdns

Windows confirms that the DNS resolver cache was successfully flushed. From this point, this PC resolves websites through OpenDNS.

8

Verify That the Whole Network Is Protected

Finally, browse a few websites from different devices — a phone on Wi-Fi, a laptop, a TV — and confirm everything loads normally. Then check the OpenDNS dashboard: your registered network should show as active with your filtering settings applied. Every device that gets its DNS from the router is now covered by the same content filtering and phishing protection, with nothing installed on any of them.

⚠️ One honest limit: a device that has its own manual DNS settings, or an app using encrypted DNS of its own, can bypass the router's DNS. For full coverage, leave devices on automatic DNS so they take the router's OpenDNS settings.
