📋 Overview & Step-by-Step Guide

1

Read the Exact Error Message

On the "Where do you want to install Windows?" screen, select the disk and click Next — Setup stops you with "Windows cannot be installed to this disk." Click Show details to see which of the two versions you have:

• "The selected disk is of the GPT partition style" — your disk is GPT, but the installer was booted in Legacy BIOS mode.
• "The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks" — your disk is MBR, but the installer was booted in UEFI mode.

The disk itself is not faulty. The partition style and the boot mode simply do not match — and there are exactly two ways to make them match.

2

Why It Happens — Boot Mode vs Partition Style

Windows Setup can only install to a disk whose partition style matches the mode the installer itself was booted in:

• UEFI boot mode → GPT disk (the modern standard; also required for Windows 11's normal install path).
• Legacy / CSM boot mode → MBR disk (older systems).

So you can fix the mismatch from either side: change the boot mode to match the disk (Fix 1 — keeps your data), or convert the disk to match the boot mode (Fix 2 — erases the disk). If the disk has data you need, always try Fix 1 first.

3

Fix 1 — Change the Boot Mode in BIOS (No Data Loss)

Restart the PC and enter the BIOS/UEFI setup (usually Del, F2, F10 or F12 while the logo is showing). Find the Boot Mode setting and set it to match your disk:

• Disk is GPT → set Boot Mode to UEFI (disable CSM/Legacy).
• Disk is MBR → set Boot Mode to Legacy (enable CSM).

Save and exit, then boot the Windows installer again and choose the same disk. The error is gone and nothing on the disk was touched.

✅ Try this fix first. Changing the boot mode does not delete anything. Convert the disk (Fix 2) only when the disk is empty or its data is already backed up.
4

Open Command Prompt from Windows Setup (Shift + F10)

If you are doing Fix 2 — converting the disk — you do not need to leave the installer. On the same disk-selection screen where the error appeared, press Shift + F10. A Command Prompt window opens on top of Setup. This is where the one-minute conversion happens.

5

Fix 2 — Convert the Disk with DiskPart

⚠️ DATA LOSS WARNING — read this before you type anything. The clean command below erases the ENTIRE selected disk — every partition and every file on it is deleted permanently, and convert mbr then rewrites it as an empty MBR disk. There is no undo. Use this only on an empty disk or one whose data is fully backed up, and double-check the disk number in list disk (match it by size) so you never clean the wrong drive.

In the Command Prompt, run these commands one by one, pressing Enter after each:

Command Prompt
diskpart
list disk
select disk 0
clean
convert mbr
exit

What each line does: diskpart opens the disk tool, list disk shows all connected disks, select disk 0 selects the target disk (use the number from YOUR list — it is not always 0), clean wipes it completely, convert mbr converts it to MBR, and exit closes diskpart. If your installer was booted in UEFI mode and the error was the opposite one, use convert gpt instead — the rest of the sequence is identical.

6

Refresh and Continue the Installation

Close the Command Prompt window and click Refresh on the disk-selection screen. The converted disk now appears as unallocated space. Select it and click Next — Setup creates the partitions it needs and the installation continues normally. That is the whole fix: from the error message to a running install in about a minute.

📌 Which fix should you keep using? For any modern PC, GPT + UEFI is the right combination — if you converted a disk to MBR just to get past this error, consider switching the boot mode to UEFI and using GPT instead next time you do a clean install.
