📋 Overview & Step-by-Step Guide

1

Understand What a Portable App Is

A portable app is a program that runs directly from a folder — it does not need to be installed on the PC, it does not write its settings into Windows, and it keeps everything it needs (program files plus your settings and data) inside its own folder. Put those folders on a USB drive and you can plug the drive into any Windows PC, run your software there, unplug, and carry your apps and settings with you. Nothing gets installed on the host computer.

2

Download the PortableApps Platform

The method in this video is built on the PortableApps Platform — a free, open-source launcher from PortableApps.com that turns a plain USB drive into an organised portable toolkit. Download the Platform installer only from the official site, portableapps.com. The installer is a small download; the drive does the rest. Once the platform is on your drive, it manages the menu, the app folders and the updates for every portable app you add.

⚠️ Download the platform and your apps only from PortableApps.com or the software publisher's own site. "Portable packs" bundled on random download sites are a common way malware travels — a toolkit you plug into other people's PCs has to be above suspicion.
3

Install the Platform on Your USB Drive

Plug in your USB drive, note its drive letter in File Explorer, then run the Platform installer you downloaded. When it asks where to install, choose the USB drive itself (its root) as the destination — not your PC's hard disk. The installer creates the platform at the top level of the drive: the Start.exe launcher sits in the root, alongside the folders the platform uses for apps and documents.

📌 Drive format: the platform works on FAT32, exFAT and NTFS drives. If you are preparing a fresh drive, exFAT or NTFS is the safer choice for a toolkit drive — FAT32 cannot hold a single file larger than 4 GB, which some portable tools and disk images exceed. Formatting erases the drive, so format first, install after.
4

Launch Start.exe and Open the Menu

Everything on the drive starts from one file in the root of the USB drive:

USB drive root
Start.exe

Double-click Start.exe and the PortableApps menu opens (it also places an icon in the system tray). This menu is your launcher: every app installed through the platform is listed here, so on any PC you open the menu and click the app — no hunting through folders and nothing to set up on that machine.

5

Add Apps from the Portable App Directory

From the platform menu you can open the built-in Portable App Directory — a catalogue of software packaged in PortableApps format. Tick the apps you want and the platform downloads and places them into the drive's app folder automatically, in the correct portable layout, ready to run from the menu. The same directory is also how you update those apps later: the platform checks for new versions and updates the copy on your drive, so the toolkit stays current without reinstalling anything anywhere.

6

Add Official Portable Editions in Your Own Folders

Many publishers also release their own official portable editions — a zip or a single executable that runs without installation. Those can live in your own folder layout on the same drive, next to the platform. In the video the drive is organised with a Tools folder, for example:

Folder on the USB drive
X:\Tools\CrystalDiskInfo

Here X: is whatever letter Windows gives your USB drive on that PC — the letter can change from machine to machine, the folder layout does not. Open the folder and run the program's executable directly. Stick to the publisher's official portable build (CrystalDiskInfo, for instance, has an official portable edition) rather than a repack from a third-party site.

7

Follow the Safety Rules

A portable toolkit is only trustworthy if you maintain it like one. Download the platform and every app from official sources only, and scan new additions with your antivirus before they go on the drive. When you finish on a PC, close the apps and the platform menu first, then use Windows' safe-eject for the drive before pulling it out — portable apps store their settings on the drive, and unplugging mid-write can corrupt them. Finally, keep a backup copy of the drive's contents on your PC: USB sticks get lost and fail, and a toolkit you rebuilt from a backup is back in minutes.

✅ Follow these rules and one USB drive becomes a dependable toolkit: plug into any Windows PC, run your applications straight from the drive, and leave the PC exactly as you found it — nothing installed.
