Update Tally Prime 6.1 to 7.0
Update TallyPrime from 6.1 to 7.0 the safe way: check TSS first, take a backup you have tested, install over the old version, let the company migrate once, and verify the licence and totals before anyone resumes billing.
📑Chapters
- Check your TSS before anything else — Help, then About, tells you whether 7.0 is even available to your licence
- Take a backup you have tested — it is the only way back if anything goes wrong
- Download TallyPrime 7.0 from the official source only
- Install 7.0 over the existing 6.1 — no uninstall, no parallel install
- Open each company once and let it migrate — migration moves in one direction only
- Verify the licence and the totals before anyone resumes billing
📋 Overview & Step-by-Step Guide
Check Your TSS Before Anything Else
Open TallyPrime 6.1 and go to Help → About. This one screen decides the whole update: it shows your current release, your licence serial number in full, and whether your TSS (Tally Software Services) is still valid.
The 7.0 upgrade is free for licences with an active TSS. If TSS shows expired, stop here and renew it first — through your Tally partner or the official Tally website. The renewal attaches to this same licence serial number; you never buy the licence again just to update.
Also note which edition you run — regular TallyPrime or TallyPrime Edit Log. You must install the same edition of 7.0.
Back Up the Data Folder — and Keep a Second Copy
First, ask every user to close TallyPrime. A backup taken while someone is still entering vouchers can miss their last entries.
In TallyPrime, press Alt + Y (Data) → Backup, select all your companies, and save the backup to a folder you can find again.
Then also copy the complete data folder to a pen drive or another computer — a second copy, on a different device. By default the data folder lives here:
C:\Users\Public\TallyPrime\Data
Test the backup before you rely on it: restore it once into a separate test folder and open the company from there. A backup you have never restored is a hope, not a backup — the rule in the video is a backup you have tested.
Finally, write down three numbers from each main company: the trial balance total, the last voucher date, and the closing stock value. You will compare them after the update in Step 6. Keep the 6.1 setup file as well — going back needs the old installer plus this backup; there is no downgrade button inside TallyPrime.
Download 7.0 Only From Tally
Two honest routes, both official. From inside TallyPrime, go to Help → Check for Updates — if 7.0 is available for your licence, TallyPrime offers the update there. Or download the TallyPrime 7.0 setup from the official website:
tallysolutions.com
Download the same edition you noted in Step 1 — regular TallyPrime or TallyPrime Edit Log.
Close TallyPrime on this machine before running the setup.
Install Over the Existing Version
You do not uninstall 6.1 first. Run the downloaded 7.0 setup and follow the installer screens — the setup detects the existing TallyPrime installation on the machine.
When the setup shows the existing installation, choose the Update option rather than a fresh parallel install. Your companies, licence and settings stay exactly where they are.
Let the installation finish completely. On a slow office PC this can take a few minutes — do not restart midway.
Open Each Company Once and Let It Migrate
Open TallyPrime 7.0 and select your company. The first time 7.0 opens a company created in 6.1, it converts the data to the new format. This is called migration, and TallyPrime asks before it starts.
Answer Yes to both questions: Yes to migrate, and Yes to the backup before migration — give it a destination folder you control. That backup is TallyPrime's own safety copy in the older format; it is in addition to your Step 2 backup, not a replacement for it.
If a migration is ever interrupted, the company shows a Continue Migration status the next time you open it — select it and let it finish from where it stopped.
Migrate every main company deliberately on update day: open each one once, let it migrate fully, and check it against your notes in the next step.
Verify the Licence and Totals
Before anyone resumes billing, verify two things. First, the licence: go to Help → About and confirm the licence serial number shows in full, the licence is active, and the TSS validity is the date you checked in Step 1.
Then the totals: for each main company, compare the trial balance total, the last voucher date, and the closing stock value with the three numbers you wrote down in Step 2. They must match exactly.
When the licence is active and every total matches, the update is finished — billing can resume.
