Disable Google Chrome AI Features

Gemini in Chrome has three layers of control - the button and panel, the permissions page most users never open, and your Google Account. This guide switches off every Chrome AI feature Google gives you a control for, states the honest limit on removing it, and shows how every switch reverses when you want it back.

📋 Overview & Step-by-Step Guide

1

Open the AI Innovations Page

Google did not add one AI feature to Chrome - it added a whole layer of them, switched on by default. The good news: most of them live on a single settings page called AI innovations. Click in the Chrome address bar, type this address and press Enter:

Chrome Address Bar
chrome://settings/ai

You can also reach it from the three-dot menu, then Settings, then AI innovations in the left sidebar.

📌 Note: Google rolls these features out gradually, by Chrome version, region and account. If your page shows fewer items than the video - or the section is missing entirely - those features simply have not reached your Chrome yet. A missing toggle is not a mistake; there is nothing to switch off.
2

Switch Off Help Me Write and AI History Search

On the AI innovations page, click Help me write and turn its toggle Off. This is the tool that offers to draft and rephrase text inside any text box on any website - the "Help me write" item in the right-click menu of a form or comment box. With it off, the menu item disappears; your normal typing, spell check and saved text are untouched.

Back on the same page, click History search (shown as "History search, powered by AI") and turn its toggle Off. History search goes back to plain keyword matching on page titles and addresses. Your history itself is not deleted - only the AI layer over it is removed.

3

Open the Gemini in Chrome Settings Page

Gemini in Chrome - the AI chat panel at the top of the browser - has its own settings page. Type this address and press Enter:

Chrome Address Bar
chrome://settings/ai/gemini

The top of the page decides how visible Gemini is. Turn off Show Gemini at the top of the browser to remove the Gemini button from the toolbar. Turn off Show Gemini in Chrome in system tray and turn on keyboard shortcut so Gemini no longer lives outside the browser window. Turn off Keep browsing with Gemini when you open new tabs so the side panel stops following you from tab to tab.

✅ Tip: Switching all three presence controls off makes Gemini effectively invisible in daily use - but the permissions in the next step are the ones that actually govern your data, so do not stop here.
4

Set the Gemini Permissions

Still on the Gemini settings page, scroll down to Permissions. This is the page most users never open, and it matters more than the button at the top.

Turn off Share current tab by default - this is the big one. Google documents that when you open Gemini in Chrome, the content of your current tab is shared with Gemini by default. With this off, a page is only sent when you deliberately share it. Also review Precise location (with it off, Gemini can only estimate your location from your IP address), Microphone (voice input to Gemini) and Media understanding (letting Gemini answer questions about audio and video you have played), and turn off anything you never use.

⚠️ Careful with shared documents: when you share a Workspace page - a Google Doc, for instance - Gemini may access your Workspace account directly to answer about the whole document, not just what is visible in the tab. Confidential documents deserve a decision before the panel opens, not after.
5

Check the Third Layer - Your Google Account

Gemini in Chrome is signed in as you, and part of its reach is governed at the Google Account level rather than inside Chrome. Two account-level controls are worth knowing:

Connected apps - from the Gemini settings you can manage which of your Google services Gemini may draw on, such as your Workspace apps. Disconnect anything you do not want a chat panel reading.

Gemini Apps Activity - your Google Account keeps a record of your Gemini chats, with its own activity controls in your account's data settings. Deleting or pausing chat history is done there, not in Chrome.

6

Turn Off AI Themes and Tab Suggestions

Two quieter features live on the same AI innovations page. Create themes with AI generates a browser theme from a text description - turn it off on chrome://settings/ai if it is listed (it also appears inside Customize Chrome on the New Tab page). The tab organizer suggests automatic tab groups; if Chrome keeps suggesting AI tab groups, its control appears on the same AI innovations page on current versions.

What stops: no more AI-generated theme offers and no automatic grouping suggestions. Themes you already applied stay applied until you change them.

7

Stop the On-Device AI Model Download

Some Chrome AI features run on a model stored on your own PC - Google's Gemini Nano. On PCs that meet its hardware requirements, Chrome can download this model in the background, and it can take up to roughly 4 GB of disk space. Open Settings, then System, find On-device AI and turn it Off (on some versions this toggle sits inside the AI innovations page instead).

To check whether the model is even present on your PC, open this page:

Chrome Address Bar
chrome://on-device-internals
⚠️ Do not delete the model's folder by hand. Chrome simply downloads it again. The toggle is the switch; the folder is only the luggage.
8

Know the Honest Limit

Be clear-eyed about the ceiling of these controls: there is no single master switch that removes every trace of AI from Chrome. The steps above switch off every feature Google gives you a control for - but a small "Ask Gemini" entry can still appear in some versions when you right-click selected text, and AI answers inside Google Search results are a Search product setting, not a Chrome setting. Anyone who promises one click removes everything is selling you a story.

Power users sometimes reach for the experimental flag behind Gemini in Chrome - GLIC - to remove the panel entirely:

Chrome Address Bar
chrome://flags/#glic
⚠️ Last resort only: flags are experiments that Google can retire in any update. It works today, but treat it as the last resort, not the plan - the settings in the steps above are the supported route.
9

Turn It All Back On Anytime

Nothing in this guide is permanent, and nothing needs reinstalling. Return to chrome://settings/ai and turn any feature toggle back On - Help me write reappears in your right-click menu immediately. For Gemini, reopen chrome://settings/ai/gemini and restore the presence and permission switches you want; the button and panel return at once. If you switched off On-device AI, turn it back on under Settings, then System, and give Chrome time - the model downloads again in the background.

✅ Tip: That reversibility is exactly why experimenting is safe. Switch off aggressively, live with it for a week, and restore only the features you actually missed.
