Use Phone Internet on Router 📶 Ethernet Tethering Trick Explained

No broadband? Feed your phone's mobile data into your router's WAN side — by a USB cable with tethering, or wirelessly through the hotspot bridge method — so every device at home or office shares one SIM.

  1. The idea — your phone's mobile data becomes the router's WAN, and one SIM serves the whole house or office

📋 Overview & Step-by-Step Guide

1

Check Your Router Supports Tethering First

This trick only works if the router knows how to take internet from a phone. Travel routers — GL.iNet models are the common example — have a dedicated Tethering option on their INTERNET page, and some ASUS routers can also use a phone over USB as a WAN source. Open your router's admin panel or check its manual for a tethering or USB modem option before you start.

⚠️ On many home routers the USB port is only for storage and printer sharing — it cannot take a phone as the internet source at all. If your router has no tethering mode, skip to Method 2 (Step 5): a router that can run in Repeater/WISP mode can still join your phone's hotspot wirelessly.
2

Prepare the Phone and the Cable

Put the SIM with your data plan in the phone, switch mobile data on, and confirm the phone itself can open a website. Keep a good-quality USB data cable ready — a charge-only cable will not work, because the phone and router exchange data over this cable. Keep the phone's charger nearby too: tethering runs the phone continuously.

3

Connect the Phone by USB and Enable Tethering

Plug the phone into the router's USB port with the cable. On an Android phone, go to Settings ➔ Network & Internet (on some brands: Connections) ➔ Hotspot & tethering and switch on USB tethering. On an iPhone, turn on Personal Hotspot and tap Trust This Device if the phone asks. The setting only becomes active once the cable is connected, so plug in first, then switch it on.

4

Connect from the Router Admin Panel

Log in to the router's web admin panel and open the INTERNET page. In the Tethering section, click Connect. The router now takes its WAN connection from the phone over the USB cable — when it succeeds, a green dot appears in the Tethering section. From this moment the router's own Wi-Fi and LAN ports are online, and every device connected to the router shares the phone's mobile data.

✅ Cable beats hotspot for this job: USB tethering is more stable than Wi-Fi tethering, it does not drop when the phone sleeps, and the router's USB port slowly charges the phone while it works.
5

Method 2: Hotspot + Repeater (Bridge)

No tethering support — or no cable? Turn on the phone's Wi-Fi hotspot. In the router's admin panel, open the INTERNET page, go to the Repeater section and click Connect. Select your hotspot's Wi-Fi name from the list, enter its password and click Apply. The router joins the hotspot wirelessly as its WAN and re-shares it on its own network — the bridge method. It works with almost any router that has a repeater/WISP mode, but it is one wireless hop weaker than the USB cable method.

6

Test Everything and Fix the Signal Position

Connect a laptop or phone to the router's Wi-Fi and open a few websites, then test the other devices. Remember the whole network now lives and dies by the phone's mobile signal: place the phone near a window or wherever 4G/5G signal is strongest, and leave it there — moving the phone around the room moves the whole office's internet with it.

✅ Keep the phone on its charger during long use. Tethering drains the battery fast and the phone gets warm; a phone that dies at 2 AM takes every connected device offline with it.
7

The Honest Limits

This is a genuine, working setup — but know what it is. Your speed is whatever the phone's 4G/5G connection gives, shared between every device, so do not expect broadband numbers. Some mobile plans throttle tethering or count it separately from normal phone data — check your plan before a whole office runs on it. And because traffic passes through the carrier's NAT and then the router's NAT (double NAT), things like port forwarding and some online games may not work the way they do on a normal broadband line.

📌 Used honestly, this is the perfect backup connection, a site-office or shop setup, or a temporary line while broadband is down — every device online from one SIM, exactly as shown in the video.
